Questions & Answers

Large infestation

My whole yard is crawling with these awful things..My concern..This stuff is $17 for 2.5 lbs..What is it going to cost me to treat my whole yard which is 3/4 acre ????????
Asked by: jude
The stuff does work. Hostas bitten by snails, are left alone once sprinkled. Maybe try a light application at first to save money and see if it works enough. Once there are less and they aren't reproducing as much, you may not need much very often. I apply only 3 times in a summer May thru Sept, when I first plant, when it seems like it's been a while, and maybe once more later in the summer. Seems to be enough. Call the company and see what they suggest for a large area? Maybe they even sell in bulk. Good luck!

How long is Sluggo effective once it gets wet?

Asked by: JMo
You should reapply as the bait is consumed or at least every two weeks. Apply at a higher rate if the infestation is severe, or after long periods of heavy rain.

I purchased it because it was a "lower cost alternative." I have gardened for many years, and have mostly used another brand of slug control. One day I had some extra time while working in the garden--and watched a slug move towards one of my plants that I had liberally sprinkled this product around a couple days before--it had rained, so the product was used as suggested. The slug stopped and ate two or three "kernels" of Sluggo over a 15 minute timeframe, and kept on coming towards the plant. I didn't wait for a period longer than 15-20 minutes after the Sluggo had been ingested, so maybe it's a slower acting product--however, my plant would have been devoured had I not been there to stop the slug from advancing. I'm going back to the other guy that I have had far better results with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For this beginner, It works! I was getting frustrated with snails and slugs eating everything in my garden, except the weeds. Tried some homemade and organic options, but the infestation was too much for me to handle. I just got tired of seeing my precious plants destroyed! Not to mention all the hours of hard work and love GONE... in a slimy moment. Read about SLUGGO mentioned from a garden blog after hours and hours of internet research. Thought, "Hey why not? Seems the least destructive and toxic way to go." So off to Home Depot website I go and bought it. Read the instructions, applied, and within a few days saw fewer snails and slugs. It even rained at some point, and the stuff still worked! Note I said fewer, it does not completely eradicate them the instant you apply to your garden. But wow, what a difference! Definitely a recommendation! Just take care around pets. It says safe, but I still kept my puppy away from the treated areas, just in case.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works, but grows strange mold / fungus?? I wish I'd have found & used this product sooner before I lost a whole bed of calla lilies to soft rot which entered the plants through the open wounds the snails & slugs created :( It did however work well to eradicate the snails & slugs since application. That said, I have noticed in some of my pots a strange white hairy mold or fungus growing all over the pellets & the top of the soil directly where the pellets are.. Shortly after its appearance several of my shade loving specimens started showing signs of disease/rot at the base of stems & flower buds. Does anyone know why this slugo seems to be growing this strange white hairy mold / fungus?? None of the plants in these pots had EVER had any disease or rot like this in the 2+ years since they were planted.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Molds and kills plants This product works great for eradicating slugs. However, when exposed to moisture, the pellets turn into fungus blooms that will kill any plants growing amongst the moldy pellets. So now my plants are dying from exposure to mold/fungus instead of being eaten by slugs. Lose/lose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works and is ok for pets This is the only slug control product I use - it really works and is safe to use - no nasty stuff in it, so ok around my pets and organic garden. Only thing that has controlled my slug problem. Remember to sprinkle more around after it rains.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works! This stuff works. It is most upsetting to see your little seedlings nibbled to death -- esp. when you've been nursing them along for a while. The deciding factor was that it is "organic" -- doesn't harm my kitty or the birds or anything else -- just the slugs. My bush beans and rapini are coming right along!
