Product Overview

Unique seeds appear like puffs of smoke around the plant in mid to late summer. This deciduous shrub also has oval, stunningly intense, dark purple foliage with red veins and stems, and individual leaf margins are edged with a thin line of red color. Panicles of pinky mauve, small flowers in spring give way to plume like, seed clusters in summer, which give a long lasting, cloud like, smoky haze to the branch tips. Best color is achieved in full sun, but this plant should be a specimen in the shrub border, a color contrast in the cottage garden, or an attractive hedge row.

  • Long landscape interest with three seasons of color
  • Makes a striking focal point
  • One of the prettiest landscape shrubs
  • Long lasting, smoky haze when in bloom
  • 2 gal., ships without soil or pot as a bare root plant to all states
  • May ship in a dormant state, with bare branches and no leaves
  • Performs best in plant growing zones 5 to 8, when grown in other Zones, special care requirements will be required
  • To accommodate mature size or when planting in groups, space 15 ft. away from other plants or structures

2 gal. Royal Purple Smokebush Shrub-DISCONTINUED is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Im not really sure how the bush will look its just sprouting leaves...looks like a beautiful color but the picture here , if it looks anything like that it will be a great addition to my front garden. They were shipped fast & very healthy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Scary at first, but hardy and a worthwhile investment The bushes came bare root and pruned and had a few nascent buds; I had expected to receive something that looked more robust so I was a little nervous. We had an early warm spell this spring and were itching to plant and ordered these early. I couldn't plant immediately and they survived a week unplanted but kept moist. Then I finally had an opportunity to plant them and followed the instructions with the package (mostly, but not 100%). As fickle mother nature would have it, a few days later we had a week of frosts. I covered the plants but the initial buds and leaves still got frozen and died. However, when the warmer weather returned, the plants were hardy enough to produce new buds and leaves and now in late May they are doing very well - robust, healthy and beautifully variegated green-purple leaves that catch drops of dew in the morning. I am looking forward to the 'smoky' blossoms later in the year. (Not sure if they will bloom when this young, but all signs point to bushes that wil become well-established and provide years of value!) We probably would have bought these from a local store but nobody carried them, so we decided to take a risk and order them online, even at an amount that seemed a bit pricey. Looks like it will be a worthwhile investment!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Arrived promptly -well packed - seemed in good condition Got them into the ground within 20 hrs - unwrapped as per instructions upon arrival. The leaves have remained intact for the 10 weeks they have been in the ground. I look forward to next spring to see if they respond to their new home. No new life yet (planted late in season, about Sept. 10.)
