I purchased this drain thinking I would glue PVC pipe to bottom but I noticed this part must have some other part that screws in the bottom first?

Answer:
This part is meant to be screwed to the shower pan using the nut then attached to the drain pipe. I don't recommend for use in an area that is inaccessible after installation.
