Customer Questions & Answers

What is the true and actual dimensions of the 2 x 6?

Asked by: Woodmill1201
You always subtract 1/2 inch from each dimension. So 2 x 6 is 1.5 inch by 5.5 inch. The length will be dimension specified. The 1/2 inch is the amount needed or wasted for "saw serf" historically when they cut the wood. Nowadays the saw kerf is super thin and is a closely guarded secret by the mills.

Do i need to sand this wood? I am trying to make a platform bed with little to no sanding!

Asked by: Marie
This is construction lumber and is not typically used for furniture. You may find minor checks and splits in this so, depending on the "look" you're trying to achieve, you may not want to use this wood.

Asked by: Chris
Yes, any of the associates will be glad to cut them for you. I have had 16 and 18 foot sections cut down for me on many occasions.

I purchased a bundle of wood and should have known better than to trust the marking on the wood. The sku number 98945 06009 is marked with MLB, S-P-F / SPF-s, No 2, KD-HT 1/4" EE 708. After I cut a board to length then looked at the end grain and saw the wet spot I decided to measure the moisture content with an ohmmeter. I put 2 copper nails at 1.25 inch apart and 5/16 inch deep. The reading of 119.7 k ohm is greater than 40% moisture content!! Wow thats almost green wood. I think Home Depot should contact the mill - I think they're being ripped off.

As is the case with just about everything one could purchase, it is the responsibility of the buyer to confirm that they are getting what they pay for. That being said, you should really check each piece before you throw it on the cart. Some of them can be severely bent or bowed or have a number of knots and cracks. Investing a few extra minutes at the store can save you some headaches downrange. The material performs as expected though. I have used this wood to frame out a number of my rental properties and it has always proven easy to work with....there's my 2 cents...
