Product Overview

The Sidemount Plus Fan Box allows you to safely install your ceiling fan or lighting fixture without having to access attic space. The box's design provides secure attachment to an existing ceiling joist. It is ideal for installation during new construction or remodeling, and can be installed in finished ceilings through a hole large enough to fit the box. The Sidemount Plus features a heavy-duty, all-metal, 2-1/8 in. deep, dual-mount electrical box with 21-1/2 cu. in. capacity. The sidemount bracket is removable for easy replacement of existing nail-on boxes without attic access. The kit is UL listed to support fans and light fixtures up to 70 lbs. 21.5 cu. in. Remodel Ceiling Fan Sidemount Plus Fan Box is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointing I think this box is probably the best packaged item on the electrical aisle. There's no way to get it home and discover somebody snagged a part. Plus it has a nice plastic cover to keep your box from getting painted during a renovation. The thoughtfulness, combined with the price led me to believe this would probably be a great choice for renovating a very old house where a bar support isn't possible. It's not a great choice. It's a two piece design, which seems handy, but it's worse than nothing of the joists aren't at 90 degrees. Where a one piece box would just be uneven, the two piece box causes the entire assembly to bounce if the joist is tilted toward the box. The hardware is just awful. The box mounting screws are extremely soft. While I didn't break them because I drilled a pilot hole first, you can only take them out once or twice before the corners on the hex head round off. I didn't even try the Philips drive. It rounds out just looking at it. But more importantly, the box mounting screws are too small for the holes in the bracket. The integral washer only gives you about 60% contact with the box. The other 40% of the washer is hanging out over empty space. That's a bad design, even if the screws weren't super soft. But they are soft, so it calls into question the ultimate safely supported load. The back of the box has great hardpoints for the fan mounting screws, which would be a great feature if the overall box design wasn't broken. Here too, the hardware was really bad. The threads on the screws and the box are entirely different tolerances of the same size. The box holes are much more tightly threaded than the included screws. The end result being the screw gets rethreaded every time you turn it. Overall it's a good looking thing that seems to have been designed for a higher calling, but cheaped out for retail. It's way too expensive for the hassle involved and the unstable design. I won't buy another.

The original box was a puny metal light fixture box that wasn't properly installed. This box was perfect for me because the hole was close enough to the ceiling joist and a brace would've meant making a new hole. I didn't have any of the problems others have mentioned. I drilled the pilot holes, screwed down the bracket and finally screwed down (up?) the nuts to secure the box to the bracket. Everything is leveled and the fan doesn't bounce or appear to do anything weird. The fan has been up there for about a year now and may weigh close to 20 pounds with light fixture. To be honest, I kind of prefer the way this mounts compared to the braces because I always wonder how simply screw/driving the braces spikes into the wood actually hold up the weight of the fans. I've only needed to use two braces in my home and so far they haven't failed though.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a great product I have installed this product twice. Each time I have been disappointed. If the ceiling is strapped (as most in New England are) then the box will not sit flush with the face of the 1/2" ceiling. If you try and slide the box low enough to bring the box flush with the ceiling then the box is not stable. I gave it a second chance on another install, I wish I hadn't.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from tough install, no improvement Got this fan box to strengthen a fan installed where a fixture was before. Box felt sturdy but the end result still had a lot of movement up/down opposite the install side. The strain relief clamped the wire to a sharp edge which seemed like a bad idea... End result, spent 4 hours retrofiting the box to no apparent improvement.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very rugged fan box. Very satisfied. Very rugged box that got the job done. No complaints at all. I would have given 5 stars, but the #10 screws included to hold your fan bracket seemed to be slightly off in their fit and form but in the end, it was a very rugged installation.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money - spring for the full cross-bar support Used four lag bolts into a solid truss member, and this box still has a deflection to it, which translates to a fan wobble at high speed. I'm going to have to now take it all apart and replace with a proper brace that spans two members. Save your time and money and spring for the full support. This would be fine for a heavy light fixture but not for a fan.
