Hi Dave:
Yes! When you release the blade control (Roto-Stop) the blades stop spinning, but the engine continues to run, and if you have the SmartDRIVE engaged, the mower will continue to self-propel.

Answer:
Yes, the one I have has 3 options: Bag, Mulch, or Discharge. For the discharge option, you simply need to set it to the Bag option, but don't attach the bag. The clippings will drop out the rear hatch.
I personally haven't used this option, as the mulching works really well, even in tall grass that is a bit moist.

I am not familiar with all models, but the "Three in One" one Honda that I have has "rear discharge". Seen in the photos is usually a mower with the bag attached. On top of the bag is a large, black plastic guard which flips down when the bag is removed. Clippings can be discharged to the rear when the bag is removed, if the "Clip Director" is set to the "BAG" position. Not having a side discharge chute Read More

On top of the bag is a large, black plastic guard which flips down when the bag is removed. Clippings can be discharged to the rear when the bag is removed, if the "Clip Director" is set to the "BAG" position. Not having a side discharge chute allows the mower to cut close to a wall or fence in either direction. The mower can also be used as a rear discharge mower with the clip director set to partially mulch and partially discharge to the rear. When strictly mulching the bag serves no purpose and can be removed if desired. Read Less

Hi Marty:
HRX and HRR models have REAR discharge built-in. There is no option to covert either to a side-discharge design.
Honda HRS models DO HAVE a side discharge design built-in. HRS models are "no-frills" basic mowers, but feature the same GCV160 engine found on many other Honda mower models. Included here is a link to the HRS216SDA, which is a single-speed self=propelled model.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 280 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great little mower For a basic mower you couldn't ask for better quality and performance. It starts on the first pull every time, and the bag always gets stuffed to the max! My only complaint, which is minor, is that the grass clippings build up in the hooks that hold the bag in place. This doesn't affect the performance at all, just needs to be cleaned out each time you empty the bag. Overall I am very happy with this mower and would recommend it to anyone. July 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by All good exelent product, I recomend re list this item aggain in the stores with this specs like this product. The machine came with a bent wheel but I repair myself but the needed the machine soon. This machine is the last sell in all PR stores October 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great mower and quality!! I have done some research on several different mowers and it was between Honda and Toro. I owned a Troy Bilt before and Honda mower before. So, I'm fully aware of the quality. Also, I read a lot of the comments and negatives ones too. I believe some people either good a bad mower off the assembly line or they didn't investigate and read the directions. I'm satisfied with Roto Blade stop and it works great. I saw the advantages of the feature because I have to stop a lot with my yard, with sticks and stuff. If you can deal without that feature then honda mower below this one is the one to go with it has the most amount of reviews. My experience is great! This is a real review, I own it and bought the mower. April 22, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Got a Lemon Have always bought Honda mowers, but this model I purchased in May this year and the transmission had to be replaced after using it for only 6 mowings on a small lawn. Was under warranty but had to wait 5 weeks for transmission replacement. parts. October 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome self propelled lawnmower From the time I took lawnmower out of box til now it has made my lawn mowing so much easier. Grass is cut very easy and looks beautifully landscaped. Can't go wrong October 18, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great choice and superior to Toro This mower is far superior to my old Toro personal pace mower, which was nothing but problems. The Honda starts easily, usually on the 1st pull. It has a gas shut off, which is nice to have when you put the mower away for the season ie run the gas out of the carb. It has two blades which make a noticeable difference in the quality of the cut. The handle folds down easily with a 1/4 twist. The mower is more balanced in weight, so it's easier to maneuver when you turn corners. The fingertip control is adjustable and gives you improved control over the pace and speed of travel. The bag holds more and it's easier to dump and replace. I have the blade clutch, so I don't have to stop and start the mower every time I empty the bag (a must feature if you catch clippings.) September 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love the Honda lawnmower Set up out of the box was so easy, added the oil that came with the mower, put some fresh gas in the tank, one pull of the cord and it started on the first pull. I was very pleased and know I will have many years of use with this mower. October 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Mower I bought this because of the Honda reputation. The engine starts with a lite pull - no priming necessary. The blade clutch feature is great. The engine keeps running when the blade control is released. Easy to restart blades. September 27, 2016
