Questions & Answers

Trickling of water

What is the most common problem when the valve does not shut off completely and trickles through the irrigation heads?
Asked by: cloe
Water trickling when circuit is shut off is generally because of dirt or other substance stuck in the solenoid valve. When shut off, the valve has zero voltage applied and the valve closes under spring pressure. If any foreign debris gets into the valve, it will hold the valve open and let water continue through the valve and out to the sprinklers.

While I used it all last summer, it worked perfectly. I turned on my sprinklers last week and this same solenoid was bad again. I metered out the leads with and without power. It goes from .6vdc to 0.06vdc, as does the one next to it. It just didn't trip the pin hard or far enough to allow the water to go through the valve. I replaced it again with the same type and everything is working again. I am HOPING this one will last longer than one season.

This solenoid was exactly what I needed to fix my "Rainbird" system & less than half the price of a "Rainbird" equivalent. It simply screwed into the valve assembly, the fix took maybe 15 minutes, & would probably have been quicker if the original wires had not needed cleaning before soldering to the new solenoid wires. (I could have used a wire nut or or in-line crimp, but prefer the more permanent joint for a humid, underground environment)

And when I activated the valve it controlled, the water flowed normally, but when I de-activated the valve the water did not stop. It seemed like the piston return spring was not strong enough to turn off flowing water. Unplugging the sprinkler control unit did not stop the water from flowing either. I had to turn off the main valve to stop it.

They need an o ring so they don't leak. But then has to be tightened a lot so will actuate valve. Additionally one has a slow leak at the metal to plastic boundary (1drop/min) that I expect will cause the solenoid to fail in a couple months. They did replace a much more expensive solenoid though. Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't last long I have three valves, and have replaced 5 of these solenoids in 7 years. When these go bad, the plunger no longer retracts fully flush. Was confusing at first because it appears to work when removed from the sprinkler valve. But unless it retracts flush, it won't work open the valve.
