Answer:
I installed a pair of these on my two State industries GS640BRS (built in May 2014). It appears that these are truly universal thermocouples kits. (Home Depot was closer and cheaper than SearsParts).

What size wrench is needed? HD always tells us what color things are and how much they weigh, but they never mention things you need to know to install it. Well, at least they carry the thing and people do not have to order it.

Answer:
A small wrench kit will work just fine. Or buy a small to mid size adjustable wrench and that should solve it.

Answer:
Finger tighten your 3 fittings then snug up with adjustable wrench. Be careful not to pinch tubing. To check for leaks apply a little soap/water mixture and look for bubbles.

24 in. Thermocouple Kit is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replacement for GE Model SG40T12TxK00 I saw a review that said that this worked for GE SG40T12TXK00 (the same model I have). I installed this and it worked! The pilot light stays lit now, where as before, once I let go of the pilot light gas thing, it would go out. For the price, just replace the thermocouple vs cleaning the old one, it will save you headaches in the long run taking the water heater apart.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works for GE water heater. Dont be fooled by the plumber or the sales people at the plumbing supply places. This works for GE water heaters. I was told by a plumber that I had to call GE and wait for the part. I went to a plumbing supply store and the told me the same thing. That GE does it on purpose so don't waste my time trying to buy it at Home Depot. I was going to believe them but took the chance after reading that it works on GE water heater. It was a different model. Well lo and behold it worked just fine. I had hot running water and didn't have to wait several days to contact GE and then several more days for the part. So go out and buy this product. It works for GE water heaters!!!!!!! I normally don't take the time to write reviews but I want to help other people not get fooled.

Unfortunately it was not the problem on my 25 year old Reliance water heater. The controller has gone bad and I am replacing the water heater. Too bad I probably will not get 25 years on any replacement water heater.

Someone on the review said it works on the Fireplace, that's why I bought it. I replaced my old thermocouple with this one and lit up the fire for 2 hours, and the fire went out by itself. The positioning adapter MELTED. See Picture.

This was a perfect fit for my 9-year-old, home-builder installed, American (brand) water heater. Sadly, I cannot say how well it worked since the problem was the control unit but this was a cheap fix to try and easy to replace.
