Customer Questions & Answers

what should I frame rough opening too

Asked by: David
Sorry, I'm confused too. The instructions on the box for the door says 80-5/8 inches high (finished). The installation instructions in a separate publication from the manufacturer, as Darryl pointed out, says the door won't fit unless the height clearance is 1-1/2 inches (81-1/2)

Can i trim doors to 72 inches

Asked by: Chuck
Yes it can be done. After cutting the bottom part removed the solid part & replace it onto the newly cut door. Make sure the door fit's the opening first, then with a sharp knife remove the solid part from the piece that you just cut off. refit it into the newly cut door use carpenter's wood glue & use wood clamps to hold it into place allowing it to dry. can also use small brad nails to hold it until dry. I have done this many times it works great just did three of the same type door its easy to do.( Be careful careful using a knife ) A wood chisel works great also. you can also cut a new solid piece from a 2 X 4 use the old one as a tempt let don't for get to drill the hole the exact size as the old one. If you order doors from Jeld-Wen, be aware that there is a very high probability that the hardware pack will be missing at least one piece of hardware essential for mounting the doors. I ordered five Jeld-Wen bi-fold closet doors through Home Depot for a home renovation. Of those five doors, two were missing a small but important pivot pin or track guide needed to hang the doors. Quality control is clearly lacking. After contacting Jeld-Wen customer service, I was told the warranty period had expired and they refused to send me the two small pieces of hardware that I had paid for but never received. Instead, they directed me to purchase them again on their website. I will never again order a product from Jeld-Wen. They would rather save some pocket change than support a customer who spent several hundred dollars on their products. Insulting.

They have worked very well over the last year. They were easy to install and have held up to daily use. They are on the light side but the advantage of that is they do not need any support on the floor. They are basic but they work and we’ve been happy with them.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from no brace for the knob The door is decent enough. (Let's face it, they are their cheapest alternative.) I do like 6 panels better than slats, though. Quality sticklers may want to opt to order the solid versions. My only real complaint is even though they are hollow core, I expected there to be a solid strip in the center to attach the knob through...there isn't! So, you can't get your knobs to keep from spinning, unless you start crushing the center of the door. Also, because the knob area is hollow, I added fender washers under the knob's screw heads, to feel secure that the knobs wouldn't pull through the door over time.

Mounting hardware is worthless the screw is stuck halfway in because the screw head is now gone it's so poorly made. You'd think they could at least include a solid set of screws for installation. Now I need a dremel to cut one of them out so the door can slide open. Mounting hardware feels like it can fall off the wall with a good pull. Good luck! Maybe that's why real doors cost a few hundred instead of this cardboard.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Some Installation Problems Two installation issues: 1.) I constructed the finished opening to 81-1/2 inches on the Jen Weld installation information that the height clearance had to be 1-1/2 inches. The door height is listed as 80 inches in many places, actually it is 79 inches so I had to add a 5/4 board to the top of the opening. 2.) I had to adjust the position of the upper pivot and then I couldn't get it to stay where I wanted it. Either the track or the pivot bracket deforms and the locking screw can easily be over-tightened. After that, the pivot can't be locked in place. I have encountered many Jen Weld bifold doors over the years and the locking screw that anchors the upper pivot location is always a problem. I replaced the pivot locking screw with a 2 inch wood screw and drilled a pilot hole through the track. I think it will hold but I shouldn't have to MacGyver a brand new one.

The holes for the hardware were drilled upsidedown with the top holes too shallow, and the bottom holes too deep (this is with the small panels positioned at the top of the doors), I had to re-drill to accommodate the hardware. The doors together measured 47 1/2" across and I had a 48" opening, which meant that I could not put a 1/2" door jam on each side of the opening
