Usually 10-32 screws, but in most cases the fan comes with mounting hardware so be sure to check the recommendations provided with your fan.

Answer:
Drywall screws or pan head screw would work. If you are mounting a fan, I would recommend using a metal box & bracket, such as this

I am buying additional boxes for newly renovated rooms. They attach to the joist in ceiling (new construction) with 2 nails seen in the picture AND 2 or 3 sheet rock screws through the attached bracket into the joist. The nails, screws, and stiff box makes for a very secure box for a fan or light. In the end the box will be flush with the surface of the sheet rock. Note this is a new construction box - Read More

Answer:
This box is rated for both fixture and fan - the bullet point in the header is incorrect and we are working to get that fixed. This box is rated for fixture up to 50 pounds and a fan up to 35 pounds. Thank for your question as it will allow us to make that correction.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by excellent box for ceiling fixtures - Very strong and secure I am buying additional boxes for additional renovations. Note the box is for new construction; nail in + 2 or 3 sheetrock screws through the bracket make the box very secure. September 15, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by good product for its price I am a D.I.Y type of person. I had no problems installing it went up in less then two minuets the only thing I had a little difficulty with was getting the wires in but all in all not a bad product. A really really good buy, after I put up the first one I went out and bought them for every light fixture in my house even those with out a ceiling fan. January 14, 2016
