Customer Questions & Answers

I have 50+ year old house with a through-the wall type of exhuast fan in the kitchen. the knob to turn on the fan is broken, which is the

reason I am thinking about replacing the entire fan, as it is quite greasy anyway. Would this fan be able to replace my existing one, which had a round motor housing of 8.5 to 8.625 inch diameter? Also how do you turn on the fan? My current fan has a knob that goes through a hole in the cover. I don't see a hole on the cover of this unit. Thanks.

IF IT FITS IN T HE SPACE OF THE OLD FAN IT SHOULD WORK FINE AS LONG AS YOU SECURE IT. YES, THERE IS A ROUND HOLE IN THE GRID WHERE AN ON/OFF SWITCH GOES. I CONNECTED THE 2 WIRES FROM THE FAN (BLACK AND WHITE) TO AN EXTENSION CORD AND JUST PLUG IT IN WHEN I WANT TO USE IT RATHER THAN HOOK UP A SWITCH BECAUSE MINE IS QUITE HIGH ON THE WALL.

can i install in wall if inner sheet rock wall has 1 foot cavity chase before hitting exterior wall?

are their extensions for extra distance between inner and outer wall. will a standard duct extension work for this installation Broan 270 CFM Through-the-Wall Exhaust Fan Model # 508 Internet # 100662376

From what I could find without going to a supply house was that you'd have to jury rig something to accommodate the extra distance and you'd have to find a way to marry the inner and outer pieces together for rigidity and probably need additional support.

can this fan be used in a bathroom

Asked by: Anonymous
Probably. Do a search of others in the same brand. It depends on how much ventilation one wants.

We installed this above our stove to use as a kitchen vent fan, and we are very pleased. We painted the cover to match the walls, and it looks pretty slick. Before installing this fan, just searing some meat on a cast iron pan would smoke up our entire main floor and leave the kitchen covered with a thin layer of grease. Now, with this fan installed, those days are a distant memory. It clears the smoke right out, as intended. We were a bit concerned that the fan might be too loud on full blast, but that's not the case. For comparison, I'd say it is quieter than most range hoods on a "high" setting. We also installed one of Broan's variable switches (Model 57w), which gives us full control over the fan. We're pleased with the switch as well. Because we installed it in the kitchen, we purchased and installed a filter, as suggested by a Broan rep in response to one of the questions on this website. First we tried special ordering the filter from our Home Depot store, but they weren't able to do that. Fortunately, it was very easy to order from Broan's website- just type in the model number (see question and answer section), and you're off to the races. Installation was pretty easy for me, an aspiring DIY-er yet relatively new homeowner. The only complications were caused by quirks of my old house (e.g., inexplicable extra wood between studs that made fishing the wiring tricky). The fan itself came with good instructions and was pretty user friendly to install.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exhaust Fan Basic exhaust fan. Seems to be of good quality. Fairly easy to install. Good instructions. Siding on outside of the house will be the biggest challenge depending on siding type if installing in existing construction.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GOOD FOR KITCHEN AS FOR SUCKING OUT HERE'S THE SKINNY ON THIS FAN FOR YOUR KITCHEN AND THE GREASE AND SMOKE. IT HAS POWER TO GET THE AIR/GREASE OUT. BUT, UNLESS YOU RE A PERFECTIONIST IN YOUR INSTALLING, AND I'M NOT, IT CAN BE NOISEY. I LIVE IN A HI RISE AND PUT IT IN THE AIR VENT IN THE WALL AFTER TAKING THE VENT LOUVRE COVER OFF. THE BLACK HOUSING I DID NOT USE. THEREFORE, IT S BASCIALLY SHOVED IN THERE NOT SECURED SO NOISE. NOW I DID NOT BUY A SPEED CONTROLLER AND WOULD NOT UNLESS YOU JUST WANT TO MOVE A LITTLE AIR. I WIRED MINE ONTO A MALE PLUG AND PLUGGED IT IN. ACTUALLY, MOST DAYS WITH THE BALCONY DOOR OPEN THE BLADES SPIN ON THEIR OWN W/O ANY NOISE SO I GET FREE AIR MOVEMENT UNLESS ITS VERY HOT. BLADES ARE PLASTIC AND SPIN EASILY. ALSO, IT HAS WITHSTOOD FALLING TO THE FLOOR FROM 6 -7FT HEIGHT W/O BREAKING. NOW IT DOES NOT HAVE A FILTER AND IF YOU BUY ONE WHICH MY STORE DID NOT HAVE YOU WILL BE CLEANING IT IN THE D/W PROBABLY EVERY TWO NIGHTS OF COOKING. AND IF THE METAL FILTER IS BUILT THE SAME AS THE BROAN HOOD FILTERS THEY AINT GONNA STAND UP LONG IN THE D/W. WHAT I DO IS JUST PUT A PAPER TOWEL OVER HALF THE GRID. WITH WINDOW OPEN SOMEWHERE THE TOWEL WILL STAY STUCK TO THE GRILL. AFTER ONE NIGHT OF FRYING OR SAUTEEING THAT PAPER TOWEL WILL BE VERY BLACK. ALSO, THE PLASTIC FACE GRILL WILL GET GREASY QUICKLY ,TOO. THAT UNSCREWS EASILY AND GOES- YOU GUESSED IT-INTO THE D/W. ALSO, I WOLD NOT PUT THIS IN A PLACE DIFFICULT TO REACH FOR THE INTERIOR NEEDS TO BE CLEANED OR WIPED PERIODICALLY FOR THE GREASE WILL GET PAST THE PAPE TOWEL OR METAL FILTER AFTER A WHILE. AND IF THE MOTOR HOUSING, WHICH IS EXPOSED, GETS TOO CLOGGED WITH GREASE, THEN I DONT WANT TO TELL YOU THE REST. I WOULD BUY THIS AGAIN. THE ONLY THING REALLY WRONG IS IT SHOWS YOU RIGHT AWAY WHY YOUR KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM IS FILLED WITH GREASE.
