I was calling it my "new favorite tool" but it didn't last long. The string broke after only a few days' use. I took it apart and discovered the inside of the grommet is rough, which frayed the string until it broke. Poor construction and not repairable. It would be sooo simple to control that it the factory.

Great tool to have. Makes life so much easier! Love it!
Yes, the string could be more durable.

I have had my pencil pull for a good 3 years, built all sorts of stuff including a small barn with this as one of my favorite tools. I just looked it up wanting to buy some as gifts and see the negative reviews...not sure weather to buy or not but I do LOVE the one I have!!!

it must be opened to cut brass grommet. doing this will allow you to get more than a dozen uses out of it before cutting string on grommet. I modified mine a month ago and all is well. a couple drops of super glue to securely hold it together and you're set.

Bought it today and it broke today within the first dozen uses. Great idea but horribly built. Had just told someone how handy it was then the plastic casing popped apart and it won't go back together.

I was going to use this as part of an invention but after use , maybe 10 pulls, it failed
I can not have a product that will fail so quickly, so I will probably invent something like this as it will be going into a field where failure is not tolerated

I bought my first retractable pencil holder (RPH) from Home Depot about 3 years ago. Amazingly, my first RPH lasted for more than a year. Loved it. My second about the same. Still loved it. Sadly, it appears the supplier recently contracted with a different plant to manufacture their product. Same name on the packaging but different look. Not such a bad thing, except..., I have gone thru 4 RPHs in 2 months. Poor quality. String breakage, & the boot that holds the pencil splits. Home Depot, you have lots of clout - pressure your supplier to fix their product, or drop their line.
