Answer:
The pressure vacuum breaker is considered a backflow preventer that protects the potable water supply from potentially contaminated water. It was likely required by local code. Check requirements of local code before deciding to forgo the valve.

The bonnet assembly is broken. I just bought the house and the new pressure vacuum breaker has a broken bonnet assembly so water shoots through the cap when I turn on my sprinkler system.

Answer:
Repair kits can be special ordered through Home Depot, but they do not stock them. If the valve is less than 1yr old you can return it to The Home Depot and exchange it out.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by installation easy, start up confusing It took a call to the "Watts" company to help getting it to work on the first time after installation. I got it to work and it works as it should. The instructions to get it to work the first time are bad. The company assumes your a plumber and not a home owner handyman. I bought a second one for my other sprinkler system. I used PVC and it passed my towns inspection. I needed an "O" ring that was omitted in shipping or I lost it. I called for a replacement 2 weeks ago and haven't received it yet. I bought one locally. The valves were confusing...what was open and what was closed ? I figured it out. June 2, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Replacement for like item I bought this breaker to replace one I installed about 15 years ago. To my surprise you could not tell them apart. No design changes, so it must be the best. I had to replace the old one because I dewinterized too early and another freeze got it. April 14, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works as advertised Bought as a replacement for one which recently bursted in the casing due to a 24 degree freeze. It is interesting that although the brass casing bursted, the PVC pipes connected to it on both sides did not. At least we now know how to prepare it for freezing weather. March 25, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by It was a great price I looked at other places but this was the best price. I had to take it apart because I wanted to go in the other direction. All I had to do was switch the valves and place them in the other direction. May 20, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Solid valve The 3/4" assembly is well constructed and relatively lightweight compared to the 1" version. July 17, 2013
