how do you know if the bowl gasket is bad?

how do you know if the bowl gasket is bad?

If your toilet is leaking at the base or the seal has failed in some way then this can be due to an improper installation or other factors that can lead to a Wax Ring failure. Wax does not just fail out of the blue because something is wrong with the wax; it is usually due to other contributing factors. For further details please call Oatey Technical to discuss your issue at 1-800-203-1155.

My toilet leaks under floor mount. Can I tighten the anchor bolts and use a sealant around the bottom to stop the leak

Asked by: steve
Hi Steve, The leak is caused by a bad wax bowl gasket, which will have to be replaced. Mike

Does size matter ? Like girth and length or is it one size fits all ?

Asked by: Jon
Properly installed toilet Flange will be sitting on the finished floor. When this is the case you can use a standard Wax Gasket (approx. .9" tall). If the Fange is anywhere BELOW that you can use a thicker Wax Ring (Jumbo) which is 1.25" tall or if your Flange is lower yet, then you would need to install a spacer kit to bring up the level of the Flange to the proper height. This is commonly needed after installing a tiled floor over an existing floor.

I give the ring 5 stars and I give the bolts, nuts, zero stars (they are made of plated metal and will most definitely rust in the future). I bought a separate pack of all brass bolts and nuts (not plated with brass). Use the wax ring and throw the included pack of nuts & bolts in the trash.

My toilet was leaking from underneath, so I called a family member and asked him what to do. I purchased this wax ring to replace the old one. After pulling up the toilet, I saw for the first time the nightmare that is old and filthy wax rings. Swapping out the wax ring took 45 minutes, and 35 of that was just scraping the old junk off of the flange. This wax ring has been holding up for over a week and I don't foresee any issues in the near future. Also - do the job yourself, save time and money by watching a video or looking up some pictures. I did this job with one wrench, some cleaning supplies, a scraping tool and a bucket. Admittedly I do not have a hack saw so the flange bolts are still sticking up.

Extremely important to prevent damage to your home, especially if you have particle board subfloors like I have. Works great without leaks even with uneven flanges, easy to install other than being a little difficult to get out of the tray. I've used 2 in the last couple weeks and will be picking up another one to install in the next week.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stopped a leak I had a leaky waste line and couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from. I decided to spend $5 and try replacing the wax seal before spending $200 to have a plumber come over. Installation took 5 minutes and it completely stopped the leak.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked well We recently changed out toilet from round to elongated and used this wax ring to seal the flange ring. It was a perfect fit and sealed the flange ring well. Just make sure that the wax ring is stored above 70 degrees for at least an hour before you place it on the flange or use a heat gun to quickly heat it up a little bit.
