I bought a new stacked washer/dryer, the old one was just a three prong regular plug. Can this outlet replace the three prong or do I need new wiring and circuit? The new washer/dryer can run with 110 or 220. I want to have it run the 110 for now and do the 220 wiring when the current tenant moves out.

Kate, with the question you asked, it is obvious you are not that familiar with electrical wiring. My recommendation for you is to hire a licensed electrician to wire your new washer/dryer combo per code. Otherwise you run the risk of damaging your new appliances, or causing a fire, or both. Dryers require 240V, and all new homes are wired with the 14-30 receptacle (4 prong). Older homes were wired with the TT-30 receptacle (3 prong). Washers typically use 120V, 5-15 receptacles, which is also a 3 prong device, but only for 120V not 240V. I'm a retired electrical engineer and a journeyman electrician in 5 states. Thank you for your question regarding Pass & Seymour 30 Amp 125/250-Volt NEMA 14-30R Flush Mount Power Outlet - Black(Model # 3864CC6).
The breaker, wiring and receptacle all need to match. The 3864 receptacle can only be wired two hots, neutral and a ground wire to a 30 amp breaker with the wire size to code. You may need to consult with an electrician.

Answer:
The NEMA 14-30 receptacle requires 4 wires as follows: L1 (red or black), L2 (black or red), neutral (normally white), and ground (normally bare copper or green). The red and black can be swapped, doesn't matter. I'm a retired electrical engineer, and was a journeyman electrician in 5 states. Mac

Can't find the boxes, P242SRD or P242RRD, that you mentioned in your first answer while doing a "search".
Will this fit in a 1-gang box or does it only fit in a 2-gang Box?

Answer:
Good Morning,
If using 10/3 wire, we would suggest using part#'s P242SRD or P242RRD which would be specifically for range and dryer receptacles.
Hope this helps!

Answer:
In order to meet NEC requirements for this outlet, you need a maximum circuit breaker of 30A, and a minimum wire size of 10 AWG. So yes, you can use 8/3 w/gnd for this outlet, just make sure the breaker is a max of 30A. Mac
