Questions & Answers

Does the door come with Fram ?

Asked by: Alex
PROPHET said: No, but a pre hung door with frame and hinges of this type is available from Home Depot. This is true but a very similar door (at the store) does come with a frame, at the same price. Always best to see in person.

Can I shorten the door by 1.5" by cutting it off the bottom of the door, or can the door be ordered 78.5" rather than the standard 80"?

Asked by: TcS
I cut this down to 73" using an instructables guide online. It involved cutting off the bottom, routing out foam insulation and some of the wood on the sides, re-installing the bottom rail from the cut off portion, hammering down an extra piece of the steel shell at the bottom of the door to secure the rail in place, then re-installing the bottom weather strip. Overall it took a while but it's fairly straightforward. Be warned that you cannot go any shorter than 73" on this door without cutting off the bottom of one of the decorative panels (unless you also cut the top of the door, which would be crazy).

Noticing a lot of complaints regarding the actual width of this (and other) doors. Folks, like with dimensional lumber, you these doors are not exactly 36". In order to do so, you're going to be paying for either a custom door or a higher price for some manufacturers that do fill the exact 36" spec on their door widths. This is done to allow for some play with framing as not all homes have "exact" door jambs studded in. So in essence, it's not the door manufacturer... but your home's dimensions. This is why they make shims folks. You wanted a less expensive door... my suggestion, rate on the overall construction of the door, durability and how it performs, not the dimensions, which rests solely upon the installer/buyer.

The width of the door slab IS NOT 36 inches, but 35 7/8, causing a need for modification in order to fit into an existing true 36 inch door casing. Also, the three hinge areas on the door slab have been per-routered, requiring shimming of the hinge voids to match the existing non-standard door casing hinges. As for the actual door itself, it is of good quality for the price. Make the width a true 36 inches and not pre-router the door hinges and you would have a 5 star plus door slab for the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheap door This is likely the cheapest steel exterior door you are going to find. It does the job. It looks OK, but the metal is very thin. It dents if you give it a nasty look. I bought three of them and since they come with no packaging, by the time I got home one was dented already. These are not sturdy doors, if somebody wants to kick your door in, it would not be very difficult. The wood reinforcement around the lock area is weak. They are light weight and this makes them easy to install, but it's also what makes them not very secure.
