Questions & Answers

Can I add hardener after the resin has been applied?

It has been over 24 hours since I applied a coat of resin to the live edge of a wood slab. The resin did not harden and is still tacky. Can hardener be applied to this coat of resin to make it harden? If not, can you suggest anything that will remedy the situation?
Asked by: Woodworker
No. If you feel that it is just a bit tacky, it may be that it is a layering resin - stays tacky for best attachment of more layers. This type will not harden all the way unless it is sealed from the air. You can seal it in a number of ways: paint it with the proper type paint, spray it with mold release (a product one sprays on the surface of a mold so the resin doesn't stick to it. If you use this make sure you get the mold release that washes off with water. I am not sure how long the resin needs to be sealed to harden but I think is isn't more than a day or two.

How much resin will this 0.74 oz tube treat? Will be buying resin by the gallon (118 oz.) and want the most economical size of hardener available. Am familiar with body filler/hardener and the small amount needed, but believe there may be a difference with fiberglass resin. This tube does not seem like it would go very far. Are there larger sizes.
Asked by: al
From Bondo site (bondo.com/bondo-fiberglass-resin-401.html) - "When mixing small amounts use 8 to 10 drops of hardener per ounce of resin or ¼ teaspoon of hardener for 6 tablespoons of resin. Note: use push pin or thumbtack to open the hardener tube working life of mixed resin is approximately 8 to 12 minutes. Mix in small amounts; never mix hardener with entire resin can."

The whole BONDO Fiberglass deal from Home Depot ain't perfect, but it solves a lot of problems in the workshop. After years of watching people do fiberglass manufacturing on "How It's Made," I decided to try it myself. I initially bought a BONDO kit which had resin, hardener, cloth and a mixing cup. It was easy and fun, and, like I said, fiberglass solves problems. And yeah, you never get ENOUGH hardener in the kit, so hence this purchase, I'm happy with the BONDO products and have bought them over and over again.

It is a large amount and if kept tightly closed it should last a long time. Price was good too. It's nice to have a store nearby that sells this stuff at a good price.
