I've read the other reviews...most were negative but I agree with the one reviewer that the failures were most likely due to user error...either in assembly or use. In any case, I was helped immensely by going to this web site for instructions on the "pro" version of this device...it is very similar and the demo will help you correctly assemble and use this time-saver. I am NOT handy...I viewed the UTube vid and with the first use was stunned at how well it worked...a real time saver! Here's the URL: Using A 3M Hand Masker. How to use a tape dispenser. - YouTube

Used it for 20 minutes in a small room, and started to not track the tape to the roll. Tape gun just bowed up like a potato chip. I purchased it bc HD didn't have another kind in stock. Will return this joke of a product. ZERO STARS!!!

I bought this hand masker thinking if it wasn't 30$ then it was gonna be cheap and not worth buying, however this little tool proved to be a time saver and a sweet addition to my collection. Anybody who says otherwise isn't using it correctly.

I was getting near the end of huge home remodel and picked up one of these to help with masking since I was spraying so much paint. The problem is that the tape keeps tracking off the paper. I noticed that the tape holder was a little loose so I added a rubber washer to fix that but it still happens. I beleive the problem is the flimsy design of the paper holder. When you pull out some paper the roll seems to bend a little. The entire process is very frustrating.
I picked up the 3M M3000 unit - yes its more money and blades are an extra cost. The M3000is made of steel not plastic like the M1000 is. I have only had the M3000 a few days but not a single issue with it.
All I can say is having the right tool for the job makes everything so much easier and faster.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by GREYSHOST66 Great when it works as advertised
The concept is to have one device to apply painters tape to a roll of painters edge paper and the concept is excellent. The execution leaves something to be desired. It works best when using narrow painters tape and short 3-4" rolls of paper. If you attempt to use the wider painters tape and rolls of painters paper 8"+ the device becomes quite unwieldy and as you apply the tape/paper along a soon to be painted edge the former 1/2" of tape along the edge of the paper begins to taper and about every 3-4 feet you need to realign everything because if you do not the tape will just dispense but not on top of the paper as designed. If this device were made of metal I suspect it would be more durable, but this device is plastic and does not have the rigidity of a metal device

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Becky Pretty cool magnetic wall
We used this on a 5x8ish section of our kitchen wall. I'd read a few places that multiple thin layers was the best bet, so I did 4 very thin coats, waiting for each to dry before starting again. To avoid having to then also put a lot of paint over it to cover the very dark coloring, we did a coat of primer, and then a good coat of paint, and it was done. Regular fridge magnets will stick, but not hold paper. However, neodymium (Rare Earth) work fabulous, holding up the kids' construction paper thick pieces of art, which was my goal all along!
