Is this safe for asphalt driveways and concrete stairs? What about new driveways and concrete that have cured for only a few months?
Asked by: MarcWithAC
No. I had a new concrete sidewalk poured 3 years ago. Used this product according to the guidelines on the package and it destroyed the sidewalk.

it this item safe for dogs?

Asked by: Steve
Yes it is. We had a snow storm not long ago and I had this stuff everywhere and took my senior dog who is almost 13 out across it several times a day for her bathroom breaks which are frequent at this age and she had no issues at all and is serious about cleaning her paws and pads when we come back in. She had no adverse reactions from licking her feet or walking on this salt. So I'd say not a issue. If you aren't sure though you can always consult your vet via phone and they can let you know if your specific pet may have a issue to watch for.

Is this Ice Melt safe for roofs?

Is it safe for roofs? I want to do the ubiquitously-recommend trick of filling a stocking with ice melter and tossing it over an ice dam on a roof. Is this safe??
Asked by: Steve
It is just rock salt so I would say so. If your roof is made with standard roofing shingles I would not be concerned as that type of material is used on homes at the coast and it is exposed to salt on a regular basis. If it is made out of some other type of material you may want to consult with the mfg of this product to see.

Can this product be used on concrete that is over 1 year old? Will it cause any damage. I usually use Prestone Driveway Heat but I can no longer find this product in my area
Asked by: GardenGuy1126
I would not. Used it on a 3 year old sidewalk and it destroyed the top layer. Used it according to package directions.

40 lb. Granular Ice Melt Blend is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 58.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ruined The Concrete DON NOT USE THIS PRODUCT. This product ruined our four year old stamped concrete. It will take thousands of dollars to repair. There is a small disclaimer on the bag (I found it after the concrete was ruined), leaving the company not responsible for damage. If there's a disclaimer printed on the bag then I'd surmise this is not an isolated occurance.

I have found the best technique for myself is to just get out there and sweep the snow off the steps and sidewalk before it freezes then spread this stuff out. Otherwise you will still be waiting days for your walkways to be safe. For some reason it seems to always snow in the wee hours of the morning here so I get up at the crack of dawn and do the sweeping and shoveling if necessary then spread this out. My elderly neighbor fell on the steps out front of her home a couple of years ago and broke her arm, so now I make sure hers are always done too. It's worth it to start even earlier to make sure she is safe! But I spread this stuff out after our last snow when I head completed my sweeping and shoveling and everyone had fairly dry steps and walk ways and I still have a 1/2 bag left even with doing some additional sprinkling after run off began from the melting snow. I will more than likely stock up on this next year as well.

The bag is heavy but manageable. Of course the prediction was to raise excitement and generate ad revenue. We received 0.0 inches of snow and I have this bag of ice melt to remind me.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Driveway is pitting and flaking! I used this on my concrete driveway that's two years old with about 2 inches of accumulated ice. When I started shoveling the melting loosened ice chunks the next day I'm noticing flaking and pitting of the concrete underneath! Now what can I do to prevent further damage.
