Answer:
Either will work. I prefer the straight type because when they fail, they are easier to get out. The fold back type, fold up like a pretzel and can be difficult if not impossible to get out. Just make sure you get the same wattage element (4500)

Answer:
Well, IF it's the elements (and it usually is). I change both (upper and lower) because of our lousy water where I live deteriorates them faster than normal. That being said, it USUALLY will be the bottom one. Replace them with the straight loop kind, not the fold back ones which are a bear to get out when they fail and twist up like a pretzel. Also, try to flush out any sediment in the bottom of tank Read More

Keep in mind, it could also be a thermostat(s). Each element, upper and lower has one. You can buy a "tune up kit" that contains 2 new elements and 2 new thermostats for under $40.00.
BE SURE to turn off the electric panel breaker before you start work and BE SURE you fill the water heater completely up before you turn power back on. Read Less

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Don't let the price fool you First of all I was skeptical about the $9 price tag, but considering my old boiler is very old I figured it would do for a short while until I can replace my water heater with a performance system. After a very easy install I am amazed at how hot my water is now, considering the element is a very simple and basic one. The screw thread fit, I felt was just a little too easy, so I wrapped PTFE around the thread to tighten the joint up. Simple install and definitely better then the price suggests. DEFFO worth the Money, BUT, I would advise you to go for the PTFE FOR PEACE OF MIND. 30 minutes to fit including draining the boiler to the element. October 19, 2016
