longer rails

I am wanting to put these rail around my porch. I already have large columns that I will be attaching them to. My problem is that the distance between each post is 8' 6" even the 8' long rails would be to short. If I get the 6' ones, can I piece them together to make my length?
Asked by: countrygirl
Hi Country girl and thank you for your question. The railings don't connect without that addition of a post, however we do offer 10ft lengths in other styles which might better suit your needs through our special order program. The Pro Desk at your local Home Depot store can show you your options, but due to shipping constraints, we're not able to make 10ft. lengths available online.

Asked by: susie
Put a post between the columns at 4'-6". Then buy (2) 6' sections and cut them to fit the spaces.

Is there a foating corner bracket?

My rail and balusters turn a corner with no post. Do you have a bracket for this?
Asked by: NorthwestD
Hello and thank you for your question. We do not make a bracket like that. We recommend installing a post in your corner in order to provide proper support for your railing.

How far apart should the 4X4 posts be installed?

I am having a deck built. The 4X4 posts will be set in concrete footings. I want to install 6' vinyl railings with post covers. Exactly how far apart must the posts be set to use the stock railings? And how high should the posts rise above the deck to use the post covers? I would like to do as little cutting as possible; however if the last section is short of 6', can I cut these to fit? Please help so I can give the contractors exact specification before they start the deck.
Asked by: MadamB
Install on 72" centers. The panels are 68" long. I cut my posts at 38" in height above the flooring. You can cut these to fit, use a bungee cord to hold railing section together if you cut off a baluster.

I have a very small front porch. Are the 6' rail sections safe to cut with hacksaw or sawzall or will it impair the structural integrity of the rail?

Asked by: DIYnoob
I would only recommend cutting with a skill saw with fine teeth.

poach railing

I am looking for wooden rails so I can paint them when I paint the house. What type brackets do I need and is there a kit with everything. Can these be painted?
Asked by: nita
Hello and thank you for your question. We do not recommend painting and of our vinyl products, the paint will damage the finish and void the warranty. We do not offer any wood railing, but if you decide to go with the Traditional Railing, here are the additional components you may need: line brackets (model # 73014296); stair brackets (model # 73019000 or 73003210); left/right angle brackets (model # 73003212). Hope this helps.

I will be attaching rails to columns. Do you make brackets to fit arc of coumn?

Asked by: Beachguy
I don't believe they make this typ of bracket. If I were attaching this railing to a round column, I would make a small flat area in the location of the two brackets on the column. There are several ways to do this depending on the material make up of the column.

5-2/3 ft. x 36 in. Traditional Pre-Built Rail Kit without Brackets is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Looking Product We chose this railing for the ease of installation, but fell in love with how beautiful it is. Chose to use contrasting color post sleeves to match my Trex Enhance deck. Very happy with the results. Pops and myself installed 12 panels in just 1 day! Used a 10" composite blade on a miter saw to trim the ends. Start with the largest opening so if you make a mistake measuring, you can re-use in a smaller opening. IMPORTANT: End balusters keep the railing together as a unit. Use a bungee cord to hold railing together if you cut off a baluster on either end. This keeps the railing together till you install it. Saves you a big headache. :)

There are two different "batches" on the 8" lengths. Some are totally composite and some aluminum interior. Not sure what the current batches are. Both are quality but the composite is easier to work with. Please plan correctly before you a couple of sections as samples and get to know them to see if they will work for you. Also, know your local codes or talk to a contractor beforehand. I feel sorry for the amateurs out there that messed up on lengths/actual sizes...but I had to laugh just a bit. Those mess ups were YOUR mistakes. YOU bought it and did not properly plan. YOU did not know your codes. There are not any professionals complaining. If you want to go cheap, face the music.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected If you are like me, your concerns about this modest priced rail is "is it cheap looking and lacks strength?". The answer is "NO". The quality is great and it literally transformed the front porch and steps/ramp to an elegant entry. Every item fit well purchased for assembly from brackets to slant of the stair rails for a ramp instead of steps.. I purchased the 4X4 post covers to slip over my treated lumber for both the short support posts and the 8' roof supports posts. I now have a permanent, strong entry. So don't worry about the price of these rails compared to the higher price rails. I cant imagine a better look or strength from a higher priced product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Everything but the brackets This comes already put together. Better than the railings at the "other" home improvement center because this railing has all the balusters. At the "other" place, you buy the balusters separately. Sure, you can get the ones you want... at a price. These sections from HD are easy to fit , level and plumb. Just make sure you understand these railings and their 8 foot counterparts are not exactly 6' and 8' - they may fit between 4x4 posts that are 6' and 8' on center, but measure carefully. You will have some wiggle room with the brackets, but not a whole lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install, once you figure a system, if cutting is required I am on my third deck so I am an expert with this railing. I needed to cut every section which as of now will be my 18th railing to be installed. I found it easy but I have found it easiest to cut these railings after disassembling them. After they are apart it is easy to cut the lengths on my cutoff saw and re-assemble. Strong, economic and a whole lot better looking than my old painted and peeling railings, I would never use wood again. The trick to taking these railings apart are that the balusters on each end have a hole punched in them to keep the assembly together, I just drilled that hole with a larger drill bit thus enabling the end baluster to be taken off each railing thus the assembly will come apart easy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I just completed installation of this railing system. My wife and I love it. It looks great and installation was straight forward. I see some negative comments about this item mentioning wrong dimensions and not up to code which are completely wrong. I'm sorry to say that the people who wrote this are inexperienced or not interested in details. If you click on the specifications tab the dimensions are displayed correctly. One writer doesn't understand that the 36" height is measured from the deck to the top of the rail, (not the width of the railing) etc. I love this product and it has made a nice improvement in my home. I used my own set up for the posts. I didn't like the post kits. I installed on concrete patio and porch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall a decent product Over the last year I've installed quite a few vinyl handrails. There are a lot of different brands and styles. This style was one of the easiest I've done, the only thing I didn't like was the brackets that attach to the post, but that hasn't strayed me away I'm about to order more. Time wise this handrail is one of the quickest after you do a section or two.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product. Tough to find angle brackets for the railing Easy to install. Just don't try and find an inline angle bracket. They only sell the angle bracket for the stair rail. If you have an angle built into your deck you have to special order the bracket at the pro desk. You can not order it online and have it shipped to the store. Its an "In store exclusive". The problem is that no store within 100 miles of me has the bracket. When I did order it they told me that it can take upwards of 2 weeks to get it. Nothing like waiting for a piece that should be in every store!!!!!!!!!!!
