Customer Questions & Answers

What type of mortar, and the adhesive to bond it to the mortar, do I use?

Asked by: Brooke
This is actually a further question to Oatey. The different types of mortar mention for this liner aren't available at Home Depot. Where do I find drydeck mortar, or the other mortar you mentioned to use?

Are you able to cut this to fit a 5 by 3 shower?

Asked by: Tam70
Yes, you can cut this to any size you want. My shower is 3' x 4' and I used the excess material on the wall behind a shower seat (something required by local code).

What type of mud/mortar is used in conjunction with this liner? I saw an answer "deck mud", but nothing like that pops up on Home Depot.
Asked by: GinaPalle
This shower pan liner is used to make custom showers with traditional tiled bases that slope toward a drain. The liner is embedded in the base as a safety measure to prevent the base from leaking water. Nowadays, with so many alternatives available, showers that are still made in this way are usually substantial, custom-built jobs. Making the base is a complicated process. The base is usually made out of deck mud, which is also called drypack mortar. Please find attached to this answer Oatey's (the manufacturer's) introductory video to making such a shower. As you can see, it's a complicated procedure, but very rewarding. Reliable tradesmen who make showers like this well are unfortunately few and far between.

I know you have this going up the walls. Do you cover the material with cement board or vise versa?

If going over how does tile attach?
Asked by: Scott
Liner goes up and attaches to the studs and the cement board goes over top of that. We recommend watching our "how to" video on the oatey website at www.oatey.com.

Leaving it sitting out on the floor for a day made no difference. In the end it took me quite a while with a hair dryer to get them out - one by one! So that was a little frustrating and time consuming. Next time I'll try and find a product that is rolled up, not folded. But at the end of the day it's a PVC shower pan liner and it works.

Product was fairly simple and straight forward to install, once you get it to lay flat. A roll would be much better. It took a while to work out the ridges caused by folding. Other than that, worked great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential for waterproofing your shower pan This is a must have for a shower installation. Its easy to work with if the material is warm. Leave it in the sun for 30+ minutes, or use a hair dryer. Its very hard to work with if its cold.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Some tips on use Product came folded. This creates folds and bumps. Although it is thick,(40mil) it works best when it lies flat. Lay it out in the sun if possible or use a heat gun on low while membrane is laying out flat, turns into butter. Very easy to work with. Corners glue up with X-15 Oatey adhesive. Nice clean job. Also used MarkE positive weep hole protector and Kirb Perfect, very slick products.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Oaty Shower Pan Liner At 40 mil thickness, the liner is very strong and not easily punctured, but it comes folded and getting the liner to lay smoothly on the floor is problematic. I even unfolded it two days prior to laying it and it was still difficult. The instructions gave no suggestions to alleviate the problem. Seaming was easy following instructions and the proper cement sealer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oatey makes it easy The Oatey PVC pan liner kit is great product for the do it your-selfer's out there. They provide a step by step guide as well as an online video showing how to install the product. I personally have a lot of experience in remodels and new construction but I think this product is easy to use even for the beginners. I hope that this product provides you with a wonderful new bathroom in the future.
