Answer:
Howdy bemmer,
The amount of time, energy, and money needed to properly re-enforce the fence half and make it into a gate would be better spent buying a pre-fabricated gate.

Howdy bemmer,
While it can be done, the amount of work to make a out of a panel would not be worth the time or money needed to re-enforce the gate properly.

Answer:
Yes, there is approx. 1/16" - 1/8" left between boards to allow for slight wood expansion and contraction with weather changes. This prevents the pickets from buckling.

I will need 10 of these. The Show Low, AZ Home Depot does not carry these in stock. If I order them and several are damaged or warped (see reviews of this product), can I refuse to accept the damaged/warped ones and order replacements without additional charge?

Hi Dave,
When we picked up our panels in Flagstaff and there were damaged boards my husband complained and was given extra boards to come home with us. I wrote a review on our use of this product so feel free to have a look. We are getting ready to buy some more for another property we have.
Good Luck,
Dolly

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.0 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Quality Control I bought seven of these panels and paid to have them delivered. The delivery was two days after purchase. Home Depot picked out the panels that were delivered. One panel was missing a board. Many of the panels had boards that were of poor quality. Some had rot. Some had chunks taken out of them. I am surprised that Home Depot would sell a product that is of so poor quality. Some of the panels looked like they were made from scraps. August 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good fence for the money I bought these at my local Home Depot and so was able to pick the panels I wanted and so avoided a couple with cracked boards. I would have given them a 5 except the rails are not exactly in the same place on each panel and so when using 'L' shaped metal brackets I had to use some spacers to keep the panels even. The panels are fairly heavy and so it takes 2 people to maneuver them into place. February 18, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by I will buy again We installed our redwood fence panels in Williams Az. Good fences make good neighbors was our reason. We wanted a fence that last and we don't like wasting time or money on a failed project. The negative info that is given about the product from other customers is true but look at your other options. You can pay 30.00 more a panel and its not that much better or you can sure up this product with your good old fashion know how. My husband saw that there were cracked boards and complained. He was given good boards to take with him. Yes we did a bit more work but it was done to last. We used wood screws and we sealed the fence to protect it from our weather in Williams. It had one problem so far (2 yrs old now)with warping and it was the post. My husband shaved the post and got the panel to be flush, secured it and we are back to a lovely fence again. The difference in the light and darker colors of the redwood is beautiful and we have had complaments on our fence. Will buy again. August 15, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good fence but nees additional support I purchased this fence to replace one that had rotted away. The redwood slats are OK, but I would suggest you add an additional 2X4 center horizontal stringer on the back to stop any warpage and twist . Add galvanized screws where the slats are attached to the 2X4 by staples. Fence was easy to install and was later coated with Thompson Stain water seal. Also, carefully examine the quality of the slats and attachments for splits, cracks and edge damage. Remember, you get what you pay for. May 12, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by waste of time unless emergency fence needed I give quality a 1 out of 5. The panels were 2-5 of the below situations. 1. severely cracked pickets 2. missing pieces where cracked picket fell thru 3. splintered pickets and / or runners. 4. edges of several pickets were soft tree bark. I gave value a 1 too. Mainly because I have to return them, and that means I wasted time on 2 days. I would have considered value higher if it was an emergency such as overnight a crack house sprouted next door, or it's the zombie apocalypse and zombies are shlepping down the city street crying "brains". I just need some nothing fancy fence panels...the main qualification being it's usability. I've been a customer for years and like Home Depot. They're great. I think on this particular product the quality control is lacking. April 7, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Too Bad The Price Keeps Going Up!!! I love my fence, it gives me all the privacy I need and it keeps out the Neighbor's dogs. February 14, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by not recommended Would not recommend this product. Contractor doing the fence repair purchased these panels. At least 4 slats/board of every panel were no good. Either they were cracked, falling apart, freying/splitting, holes in them. If you are doing this yourself, and as an emergency only, fine purchase the panels. If you want a fence to last and of good quality, purchase something else. Quality control is lacking on these product. These panels remind me of remnent pieces. (Meaning left over pieces they wanted to salvage.) May 7, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by nice bought this with my wife and its amazing. we do live in Cali so we don't get a lot of rain to worry us about getting the wood ruined March 21, 2014
