Customer Questions & Answers

What is the Load limit on these columns

I am building a 12X12 gazebo and want to know if 4 of these are sufficient for my corner posts assuming I am connecting them with doubled 2X8's and then putting a shingled roof on top.
Asked by: RadDadD
Add the dead load (lumber, shingles, etc.), add the live load (snow - 30 lbs per sf is conservative), then total everything and divide by 4. This gives the load per column. Ignore the fact that it's a tube instead of a column. The cross sectional area is 5.125 square instead of 5.5 inches square for a standard 6 x 6 post - so multiply the load that a 6 x 6 will support times 0.86. YES IT WILL SUPPORT A 12 X 12 GAZEBO.

Is there a small (maybe 3/4 inch) screened vent plug in column to help ventilation? if so what is it called? And can it be purchased individually? Thx

Asked by: Rich
No... It is a hollow column... Not sure why you would need a vent hole for pressure treat, kiln dried column... But the answer to your question is, No....

Customer Reviews

6 in. x 6 in. x 10 ft. Pressure Treated Wood Column is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Finishing Touch! We just had new siding and windows put onto our home this summer. The old wrought-iron posts on the front porch were hideous, so we used these as replacements. They look beautiful. We stained them with BEHR oil based stain, in a cedar semi-transparent colored stain. 2 coats, the 2nd just for added protection, and they look very nice. My husband and father-in-law put these posts up in about 2 hours, after cutting to the desired height. Little cracks were formed on the surface when the posts were put in, but we just made sure the stain got into the cracks as good as possible. They just look like imperfections on the wood. These were kind of pricey, but worth it! Nice addition to our "new" home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product. I looked at a number of replacement porch post options. The PVC posts were very expensive. So, I considered solid pressure treated 6x6 posts like my rear deck is built on. However, those are warped, split, rough grain, etc. and not something I really wanted on the front of my house. I was stuck. I asked a couple of contractors and they said those were my only 2 options unless I had a carpenter build them for me which including labor would cost me the same as the PVC posts. So, I scoured through the internet and ran across these. I was really skeptical about rough grain, warpage, and splits, but they were a fraction of the cost of PVC so I took a chance and ordered them. I was very surprised when the posts were delivered on a long wooden crate that was to obviously insure against warpage and damage during shipping. There is a stiff styrofoam core in the posts to ensure the posts remain square and straight over time. The wood grain was quite smooth for pressure treated wood and there were only a few minor scars and scrapes that was a breeze to fill. I actually like these better then the PVC as they look and feel rock solid and I saved a bundle in the meantime. They look great. I used a high quality primer and paint to protect against the elements. I feel confident they will last a long time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice item, but tough to get These posts are well made, absolutely straight and true, and will serve their purpose as porch columns quite well. They seem to be built using a waterproof epoxy of some kind so I think the possibility of de-laminating is very remote. The picture shows the edges relieved (rounded over) but are actually square and sharp. I relieved them myself in just a couple minutes with my router. Also a couple of runs of epoxy had to be sanded off the outer surface of one column, but no huge deal.
