Does not specify on this page, but I thought it did. "Circulation mode" just turns on/off fan only for air circulation--for short periods.

The RTH8500 can be powered three different ways: With just batteries, with the system transformer and battery back up and just off the system transformer.
In applications where there are batteries installed, for back up, if there is a power loss the display would remain fully illuminated without any disruption.
In applications where there are no batteries, and the RTH8500 is powered off of just the system transformer, if the power drops out, or below the minimum requirements of the RTH8500, the display would go blank. However the programming and installer set up options already chosen and saved would not be lost, as they are saved onto an eeprom chip in the microprocessor.
Maintaining the clock settings in situations such as this, is a feature called Real Time Clock (tm). This allows a lithium coin cell battery to power the internal clock when there is a loss of power at the thermostat. Read Less

Answer:
The thermostat controls will operate on battery however the transformer power loop comes from building AC - the thermostat only switches that power according to its programming. Hence, no building AC no heating/cooling however, the thermostat programming will be retained for the duration of battery life.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 79 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Honeywell Thermostat install After 7 years in my 2 story new home without and issue I had to replace the 2 thermostats logically with the same brand and model but after installation I have founded difficult to sync both to work unison and referred to the installation instructions but reading them is vague and gray. I must contact Honeywell directly to advise on a solution. August 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Hold.... Way too many features. What do you want your thermostat to do? Cool and heat the house to the temp you desire. We are either home or not. We can physically turn the thermostat up or down. We bought the house with this junk already installed. We are replacing it with a physical button thermostat. This is what happens when you try to overthink the room. It resets all the time. Wants to go to a phantom schedule that I did NOT program or some mysterious HOLD mode. When I called customer service and spoke to someone that could not understand or speak english I was DONE. The number of positive reviews of this product ate suspect when you research other sites. Buyer beware. June 25, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by For convenience. This was purchased for the auto switch from cool to heat feature. The heat hasn't needed to be used yet, but the "cool " function seems to be too sensitive. The A/C cycles very often, and seems to make the house colder than it should be, considering the cool setting "value." August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Honeywell Touchscreen thermostat Just purchased this product to replace our aging thermostat. The installation did require I utilize the addition common wire, but the wiring bundle had enough wires to accommodate this and hooking them up was easy. August 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Thermostat Upgrade Going from an older (Mercury Switch) thermostat to a programmable model has its challenges, not all of which have to do the the newer unit! Access, old brittle wires, and the match-up to the existing decor (where is that paint for the wall - I know I kept some around . . .). Anyway, wiring was pretty straight forward; what was not covered was the hidden programming/coding required to make the unit work for my application. I had to actually resort to calling Honeywell's Tech Support and they were able to identify my configuration and guide me through the internal coding changes required to configure the thermostat. Voila! May 5, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Simple interface - easy to read I replaced a unit with a small screen that was hard to read and more complicated to set. The larger screen is easy to see and the touch interface is intuitive. So far, I only have it installed as a single stage controller like the old one, but when I get time will set for multi-stage since the furnace supports it. My wife was concerned about the green screen, but it is only green after a tap and then the back-light turns off. We had a similar unit in our last house that came with the high efficiency furnace install. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great thermostat We had one of these professionally installed in our previous home and I wanted the same for the house we live in now. It was a bit of a challenge to find the exact model, but Home Depot does carry it and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a thermostat that is user friendly. April 26, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junk I've worked with dozens of these and every last one kept reflecting inaccurate temperatures. This unit should have been recalled when it came out. Another interesting detail, couple years back a popular online seller who we all know had one bad review on this product and it was the only review on their site. Suddenly in past year appeared an influx of five star reviews. Very suspicious especially considering how badly this product performs. April 19, 2016
