Answer:
It depends on the paint. My walls were painted under the wallpaper, I found out. Latex paint can get scratched easily, and the steam makes it rubbery and soft. As long as you are careful with the scraper, you will only need a minimum amount of patching.

Answer:
Steam should not affect the painted surface. Its the glue holding the paper to the wall that may damage the paint. Follow all directions in the owner's manual and gently use a plastic scraper to help remove the wallpaper. Good luck with your project!

Answer:
Yes, as long as you don't hold the steamer in the same spot for a long time. If you leave it in the same spot the steam and moister will eventually cause problems with the paint.

I feel that if your walls are painted drywall there would be a problem. Most likely the paint would blister. The steamer puts out very hot steam.

I've been watching videos of how to use a wallpaper steamer and they all say to turn off power to the room before steaming. Does the steamer need to be plugged in to work? If so, how would you turn off the power in the room???

Will this steamer work on grass wallpaper?

No it won't work if the power is off. Turning off the power is only recommended if you are stupid enough to put the steamer over an electrical outlet or let water drip into one.

The manual for the Wagner steamer does not say you should turn off the power to the room you're working on, but it does say you should not let water drip into wall outlets or light switches. I just kept a towel with me to wipe up dripping water, and I didn't place the steam head directly over any outlets or switches.

The steamer works by heating the glue underneath the wallpaper until it's soft enough that you can peel off the paper. If your grass wallpaper is glued on like most wallpaper, you should be able to steam it off. You will still have to remove whatever glue is left behind. I used DIF gel for this and it worked like a charm.
Removing wallpaper is messy. I suggest you use a drop cloth to protect your floor and masking tape to keep water and glue remover from getting on the trim. Read Less

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Three bedrooms in 3 days I needed to strip wallpaper off three large bedroom. It was "paper" wallpaper, almost impossible to remove with just water. I didn't want to use any chemical products, so a friend of mine recommended this steamer. I was a little skeptic at first, but once I put it to work, I realized what godsend invention this was. Sure, stripping wallpaper is still a tedious messy job. But this little fella will make it much easier and less stressful. I also did a second pass to remove the extra glue that was still on the walls, and then washed them with water and fabric softener. Walls were squeaky clean and ready to paint in no time. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Well worth it I had tried 'worlds best wallpaper stripper'and scoring tool. 4 1/2 exhausting hours to remove 12 sq feet of 165. This product is super easy to assemble. I learned as I used to apply enough steam to be really effective. I was dealing with 3 paper layers, bottom one applied directly to wallboard! The pad does accumlate water so I kept a bucket next to the ladder to pour off excess. I had to use the small pad over doors and windows - super drippy. I did not find it neccessary to wear gloves or long sleeves. If you're careful you won't need them. The task was still tedious but this product saved me dozens of hours. Highly recommend. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful product I had to get several layers of paper off and making very little progress until I bought this steamer. Works fantastic!! September 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great!!!!!!! Utter simplicity, good design, well engineered, easy to use, lightweight. It's just a plastic container with an element imbedded in the bottom. No switch even. We had to do a ceiling with two coats of paint over 80++ year old thick paper on plaster. Had to scrape the paint which pulled half the paper thickness off first. The rest almost fell off with the steamer. Only minor improvement could be a more ergonomic handle on the large paddle. Hose length would be fine for walls but for a 9' ceiling I made a steamer platform on my 6' fiberglass ladder & bungeed the steamer to it. I also hung hooks for the paddle. Consider a rolling scaffold and 3' wide roll of disposable kraft paper. MUCH better than renting and cheaper too, considering we have more rooms to do in this 1890 vintage bldg. It's paid for itself already with this ceiling being the first task. Wagner has a winner with this one. March 14, 2016
