Questions & Answers

Can I use this for crack I drain pipe

Asked by: Tia
No, you cannot use Real-Tuff thread sealant to repair cracks in pipe. It is for sealing threads, not repairing cracks. It doesn't harden or set up like an epoxy.

Yes, Real-Tuff will work on the pipe material called out. This could change depending on what you have running through your pipes. You can refer to www.oatey.com for more application details for this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good thread seal and lubricant for certain applications I got the Real-Tuff thread sealant to use instead of Teflon tape in some of my plumbing projects. I like Teflon tape because it’s pretty quick and easy to put on. But sometimes tape is a pain to keep in place when starting to assemble parts. So I thought a paste type product would give the same Teflon performance without the loose tape hassles. The sealant is really thick and rich and chocolaty. High viscosity with an apparently high Teflon content. I used it to seal the freeze plugs in my pool pump and it went on easily and lubricated the threads well. I was going to use it to seal the drain plug on the pool filter but realized the paste would not work well in a fitting that was exposed to particulate contamination. I could just see me taking the fitting back out to find the sealant filled with filter media that would be a pain to clean off. Which does bring up the one drawback to a paste type sealant. If you put in on parts you routinely disassemble and reassemble the paste is likely to pick up particulates that will require troublesome cleaning before reassembly. I have decided to use tape in those situations. My next application will be on my garden sprinkler pump on my well. Those parts are not normally disassembled and the paste sealant may work much better there. Overall I am very pleased with the Real-Tuff thread sealant and look forward to trying it on different plumbing applications around the house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oatley does it again Oatley has made a product that can be used on an almost inexhaustible list of materials. I love the fact when its used, one does not wonder how long to wait for a complete seal! You can use the joint at once. The "stink" of solvents is gone and it can even be used on drinking water lines It does not drip like the old fashioned type. Its actually a Teflon based product and I am going to try using it in place of Teflon tape so I know my joint will be leakproof.
