What is a cubic yard

What is a cubic yard
Asked by: Keith
Cu yard volume (3ft x 3ft x 3 ft) varies according to how loosely, or how tightly it is packed. as well as composition of the material. I once had over 3 cubic yards of soil removed in order to install a cement walkway 4 ft wide x 50 ft long x 5 in + deep and the contractors wheeled trailer container was exactly 3 cu yards in size. and he packed the dirt and tamped it down hard. and level with the sides of all the sideboards of that trailer. You can get loosely packed light weight material, or tightly packed heavy material. In any case I would not want to carry 3 cu yards in a pickup truck as some bags of 1 cu ft of top soil weigh 40 lbs and it takes 27 of them for a cu yard which is 1080 lbs . (40 x 27) 3 cu yards would exceed 3000 lbs (27 x 3 ) which may be more than than a 3/4 ton pick up can handle . So I would not recommend using any pick up truck for that amount of weight

Can you use this for grading project around the house?

Asked by: Rachel
Rachael: You did not mention how big an area nor what it's use. If this is for a standard home lot 5, 000 to 10,000 sq ft) and not a lot of acreage that you don't want to grow anything on, and If you are planning on planting a lawn, shrubs, or trees after you grade then I recommend using only the best top soil as the grading soil will become your top soil so why not have the best ( unless you are filling in spots that are 5 ft deep or deeper) I once installed a train (7 cu ft) of rich organic top soil in a new house where the housing tract ground had been bulldozed and scraped level and had removed much if not all of the top soil. Due to standard requirements of grading for drainage 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the house and away from neighbors I ended up with a channel that started shallow in back and ended up 3 feet deep in front which required that I construct a different method of drainage. . So in places the top soil was more than a foot deep . As a result of good organic fill dirt (top soil) everything I planted grew in abundance and much better than any neighbors plants who planted the same things I did. Therefore I recommend only using rich top soil for grading lawn and planting areas for shrubs, trees, etc. as every plant wants to have good deep rooots in soil that holds some moisture . There are two tools for speading and compacting a few inches of top soil , Both are approximately 3 ft wide hand rollers. One is a round metal cage full of holes every 1/4 inch apart that you fill with top soil and it drops top soil down on the ground in a 3 ft swarth as you roll. And the other tool is a round empty cask that you fill with water to add weight to compact the top soil by rolling over the deposited soil after you lay down a few layers. These tools allow a much better way of both grading and laying down an even layer of soil to your desired depth. Once the soil is compacted lightly sprinkle water on the new soil and any water puddle you see will tell you where the soil is lower than the surrounding soil and thus tells you where it needs more soil and needs recompacted. ( the water should also run away from the house when grading a home. These rollers are also much easier than using a shovel and rake to spread the soil evenly particularly since it is not as easily nor as evenly compacted . I do not know the name of these tools and none of the professional landscapers I talked to in my area have even heard of them where I now live. But try some specialty shops that sell and rent equipment.

How many yards of top soil do I need to fill a garden 4 ft wide x 12 ft long x 12 inches high?

How many yards of top soil do I need to fill a garden 4 ft wide x 12 ft long x 12 inches high?
Asked by: AB
AB Use simple multiplication and division Convert your measurement to cu inches 4 ft wide =4 x12 (48inches) 12 ft long ( 12 x 12 in) =144inches x 12 inches high = 48in x144in x12in = 82,944 cu inches 1 cu yard =36 in x36 in x36 in = 46,656 cu inches Your 82,944 cu in /46,656 cu in (1 yard ) = 1.7777777 cu yards Hope that helped.

9 cu. yd. Bulk Topsoil is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Check where they are getting the soil Check and ask who they are getting the soil from because I didn't and I now have to figure out how to move sand that was mixed with dirt. This is not worth the money unless you truly know that you are getting top soil.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mostly Clay, lots of paper and plastic in soil Im in the Atlanta area and the topsoil delivered was mostly clay and had a lot of contaminants. i was disappointed with the amount of paper, plastic and fabric that was torn up and scattered in the soil.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Landscaper said "best he's ever seen" We live in Fairfield county CT. I was immediately contact about delivering the soil and setting up a date which ended up being one day before promised on the web site. The driver was an expert at dumping the soil just where we wanted it. Best yet, it was so rich and beautiful. It smelled vaguely of farm. The landscaper we hired said it was the best he ever seen. The grass popped in just 6 days on this beautiful stuff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product - Great Customer Service We are in Atlanta and we ordered 10 cubic yards for our backyard to grade a 3 foot drop off. The Customer Service team called quickly after placing the order to schedule the appointment and were flexible to work with our schedule. The driver arrived per the agreed upon window and they dropped it off at the back part of our driveway which was an added bonus. The soil was clean and did the job. Would definitely recommend the product and make sure you have a good wheelbarrow!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very happy with product. Great product. Dark color. No rocks or debris. Ordered 6 cu. yd. Easier than using bags for this much soil.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Topsoil - terrible purchase We've considered asking for our money back. The topsoil isn't the same as in the picture and is mostly sand. It would have been easier to buy the individual bags. We purchased topsoil because we have a lot of sand around our house and wanted to build up thicker soil around the house (it didnt need to be good, just not sand). The soil delivered was exactly what we already have. There is so much sand in it! It's not top soil at all. We will go to the more expensive garden center down the road from now on.
