Answer:
The internal mechanism rotates inside the exterior shell, which is fixed. The rotation can be over essentially any angle you set, or a continuous 360 degree full circle.

I believe you will have to install an inline valve in an appropriate position in the line to shut off a head; i. e. they are not valved.

Answer:
If the exterior can/housing is AOK, you can unscrew the interior mechanism and replace it without digging anything up...a real plus. You need to buy an appropriate Rainbird Maxi-paw Sprinkler tool for a few bucks to do this and it works like a charm. The tool is also helpful for adjustments of the range and rotation.

Hi Leo.
Thank you for your question and welcome to The Home Depot Community.
Chances are that you will have to dig around and under the sprinkler connection in order to replace it. This will be necessary to prevent dirt from falling into your connection once you have dug the sprinkler up and to give you enough space around the sprinkler to work.
This will not be an easy task since the connection for your sprinkler is buried almost 10-12 inches underground but it will not be a difficult task either. Although this may be a laborious task, it is a necessary action to prevent problems later on from possible clogs if any material falls into your connection.
Be careful when you start to dig around the sprinkler so that you do not damage the sprinkler line as you are digging. The sprinkler line may be as shallow as 6 inches below the soil or as deep at 12-16 inches.
Once you have cleared the area around the sprinkler, you are ready to remove the old one and replace it. If any water from your sprinkler line drains into the hole you just dug, either bail the water out or wait for it to drain. If you have a clay soil, it will be quicker to bail the water out.
After you have replaced the pop-up sprinkler, be sure to test your connection for leaks before you bury it again.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

I want to take out a damaged 2045A rotor and replace with an AG-5 rotor. I am trying to avoid having to dig up the original 2045A casement, i.e. will the AG-5 fit in the black case for the 2045A or are they different sizes?

Thank you very much.

Answer:
According to the Rain Bird Maxi-Paw website and parts list, the two models (2045A and AG-5) use the same outer case. If you needed to replace just the outer case, you would order the same part number for either. So, theoretically, the sprinkler heads should be interchangeable in the outer cases.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Replacement Purchased this item to replace a worn-out maxi-paw head in my watering system. You will definitely need (require) the special wrench to make this replacement. Using that wrench, you can change the head in a few minutes and be up an running again. Includes easy-to-follow instructions. August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy replacement for 20 year old models This was an easy replacement of four 20 year old units in a horse "turn-out" arena. The factory installed nozzle was the correct size for this application. I pushed up the head with a long screwdriver to determine its direction and marked it with crayon so I won't get a face full of water when I turned on the water. (The valve is directly below each head) The unit was screwed onto the pipe with my mark pointing away from me. With the water on, I adjusted the sweep and direction in which each sprinkler would shoot. June 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Replaced an older (still working) unit I installed these in my yard 15 years ago and they still work without a hitch. None have required any parts changes whatsoever. My sod has been redone and I replaced all the heads with these (the same model). My 15 year old heads were not broken, I just simply replaced them since my sod was being completely redone. Hoping for another 15 years of flawless performance. July 8, 2016

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Grey water This series of unit was designed to not clog as easy as normal sprinkler heads for such usage as grey/dark water from septic tanks, ponds, lakes,.... yet they are only slightly less susceptible to clogs than standard heads. June 1, 2016
