Customer Questions & Answers

Toilet Leak Detection Tablets

Home Depot and other home improvement stores used to give these out for free in hopes customer would return for repair parts later. These are very inexpensive and wonder why Home Depot no longer provides these as a courtesy item. It doesn't make sense to make the customer purchase a large quantity when only one or two packets are required at any one time. I would appreciate a comment from a Home Depot representative. Thank you.

The answer dated December 2, 2015 is wrong, Wrong, WRONG! Do not flush the toilet- of course the water in the bowl will turn blue, because the tank was full of blue water! The idea is to see if there's a slow leak in the flapper valve- if there is, the blue water will seep from the tank into the bowl and gradually color that water blue, in 20 minutes or so.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from simple These tablets do what they are supposed to. Just follow the directions and you will see in about 20 min if you have a leak or not in your toilet. They are very easy to use. Make sure your fingers are dry if you touch the tablet or it will stain your skin blue. Don't worry though it will wear off. Best to use rubber gloves when handling the tablets.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It doesn’t hurt to be sure I’ve got 3 toilets in the house, and I don’t personally use 2 of them (they’re in a tenant apartment), so I figured I’d grab a bag of these tablets and test all 3 for leaks. Considering the rising cost of water&sewer bills, it doesn’t hurt to make the extra effort, just to be sure. And, as luck would have it, none of them show any evidence of a leak. The tablets come in a bag of 20 “single serving size” packets, with bilingual (English/Spanish) instructions. We’re not talking rocket science, here, folks: open the packet, dump in the tablets (2/packet), wait for them to dissolve and color the water a lovely blue (about 2 minutes), then check your bowl for blue a couple of minutes later. No blue? No leak. Blue? Leak. Oh, right: and don’t eat them (it says that). However, it also says they’re non-toxic, so for anyone that was worried about forgetting, and having your dog drink out of the bowl after that first flush, it sounds like they got you covered. I like the fact that they’re in single-serving packets. It makes it easy to keep them around for periodic testing without worrying that they’ll pick up ambient moisture in the air and start to go all mushy. There’s nothing on the package that says for certain how long they stay good in the packets, but it did say they’re warranteed to work for a year, which probably means they stay good a while longer than that. If you pay for your own water, something simple and easy to use like these tablets is worth the few bucks they cost.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and Quick Toilet Leak Test Tablets! The Simply Conserve Detect-A-Leak Toilet Tablets are simple to use and make toilet leak detection a breeze. Just drop them in the tank, wait a few minutes, and flush. If the water in the toilet comes out blue, you have a leak. I tried it on two toilets, and fortunately, didn't have any leaks. The pack is for 20 uses. Given the current drought in Southern California, water conservation is a must. This simple test aids in that. Great product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from detect-a-leak; worst product ever the tablet does not dissolve well. creates a stain where it lands. does not dissolve in the tank with blue water. very unhappy and I paid for these! What a mistake!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product for detecting slow leaks This product appears to be a dye packaged in tablet form. Works great for detecting slow toilet tank valve leaks, but it's a bit overpriced. There are lower cost alternatives, e.g. food coloring, that work just as well. This would be a great product for municipal water authorities or plumbers to give away as a means of reducing leaks and driving business.
