I have painted textured interior walls. Can I use this product to clean the walls without removing the texture. I am thinking of a dabbing rather than wiping method.
Asked by: cheeks
Not sure but I was able to use them on brick and that's a rough texture. The worse that could happen is that your walls may tear apart some sponge particles resulting in having to vacuum the walls afterwards.

Why does the store not carry dry cleaning soot sponge?

Do they dry out or deteriorate? Is the demand so low that its not worth carrying? Can you buy a pole to clamp the sponge into so that you can clean the ceiling without a ladder?

We had accumulated soot on ceilings and walls because we have converted both fireplaces to gas logs and use them frequently throughout the cold weather. Last year we needed to have all the ceilings repainted and we weren't up to the time/money to go through that with the walls a year later. I researched the topic and found these dry sponges are frequently used by fire and smoke damage cleaning crews. I decided to try them. It was shocking to see how well they cleaned. Night and day results. We have a large two-story foryer painted off white. I started at the top where the almost newly painted ceiling ended and the walls started and it was as if a fresh coat of paint had been applied. I simply pulled the sponge down from top to bottom. I was able to get about two strips done using one side of the sponge. (I flipped it over and did two more and then needed to replace the sponge with a new one.) Furthermore, I had tried different forms of wet cleaners around the electrical outlets (which seemed to accumulate more dirt) and had made matters worse. So I know from experience soot is not easily removed with traditional cleaners that use water to dilute and rinse. In fact the streaky results are worse than the grim.. But these dry sponges came to the rescue. Admittedly, one needs to be prepared to use ten or twelve per room because they do fill with soot and need to be discarded. It is still less expensive than painting, though. Being on a roll, after I had successfully cleaned the walls, I was able to remove soot above the fireplace openings. Even though the brick is very rustic and gritty, it didn't tear apart the sponge material. That "before and after" was amazing as well! My advice is not to attempt to use any "wet" product and that includes the wall erasers. They do not work and as described they ruined some areas. But these do an amazing job. And yes, I did use them on the arms and back of our white fabric sofa which did not appear to be dirty, but when I looked at the end of the sponge, it was gray. So apparently the soot was settling into the fabric. I probably caught it just in time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from cleaning soot sponge I returned the product because I expect the results that was describe by the manufacturer The sponge still left soot and marks or stains of soot which still need to be clean by another process whereas I can use this the second process alone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not good for soot removal Bought these to use on plaster walls in a house where the boiler backfired. Tried them dry then wet and either way a Mr. Clean magic eraser worked better. That is what I ended up using and even though I went through a lot of them they did the job

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Erases Candle/Fireplace Soot from Ceilings & Walls The chemical sponges are individually wrapped and are a good size and weight for handling in one hand. It works best on flat latex paints on surfaces that have not been previously disturbed by fingers, scuffs or previous attempts to wash with water based detergents. It seemed to leave streaks on eggshell or satin latex finishes, otherwise I would have rated it w/five stars. The streaks had to be removed by subsequent scrubbing with an all purpose detergent and water. Did an amazing job on white ceiling paint. The results were like comparing a new bright white undershirt to an old dingy T-shirt. Users should take the precaution of laying down a drop cloth since the cleaning process generates fallout rubber dust, similar to school pencil eraser redidue or lottery scratch off dust. Overall, I was glad I bought a 12 pack. For roughly the price of a single gallon of a premium quality latex paint, I figure I can avoid painting about 6-8 ceilings, and all the associated labor and costs of materials. Good product, notwithstanding the above limitations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Product does what is advertised and does it well We had soot enter our room from a gas log fireplace. It was all over the ceiling, walls, and brick front fireplace. This product was easy to use and really cleaned the ceiling and walls where we could then paint the room. Working with rooms with less soot, the product actually lasted longer.
