Product Overview

Active Ventilation Products solar powered attic fan product line, the Round Back Solar Fan, is excellent at exhausting attic spaces for shingled roofs. The solar panel provides energy to the fan on sunny days to increase the vent’s CFM over and beyond a standard non-motorized static vent. The Round Back Solar Fan is made of rust free aluminum, 8 in. Dia exhaust fan with a 2 in. collar height and 13 in. x 13 in. square flange. Its low profile design looks pleasing on shingled roofs. The Round Back Solar Fan has a solid vent cap with an inner vertical louver cylinder to keep out insects, birds, and animals. The inner vertical louver allows air to exhaust without resistance. Model RBSF-8-WT is powder coated with an electrostatic charge in white finish. The powder coating finish adheres extremely well and is more difficult to remove than wet paint which adds to the vents durability and long lasting clean appearance.

  • Excellent choice to removing radiant heat from attic spaces
  • White powder coating finish is significantly greater at resisting scratching, chipping, and oxidation
  • Solar panel: 5 Watt, 12-Volt
  • Ventilation rule 1:300, application per sq. ft.: 200 sq. ft.
  • Net free air space: 50 sq. in.
  • 2 in. clearance between bottom of vent cap and flange
  • Built-in inner vertical louver cylinder has a 1/8 in. opening between louver blades that will keep out insects, birds, and animals while allowing air to move through the vent without resistance
  • Inner cylinder louver design does not allow accumulation of particle buildup as found in using an insect screen
  • 1/8th in. opening between the louver blades and all aluminum (“noncombustible”) material meets the requirements of California building code 706A.2 Vents to resist the intrusion of burning embers and flame through ventilation openings
  • 365 CFM at 0.1 SP
  • Helps to reduce energy costs

Customer Questions & Answers

Would this work on a greenhouse?

Asked by: Caladian
yes, but the amount of work and extra materials would depend on the type of roof. also a green house usually keeps the heat in, not fan it out.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from this was installed in full sun in a shed. Didn't meet the expectations we had hoped for this prod... this was installed in full sun in a shed. Didn't meet the expectations we had hoped for this product. We have considered getting another to add to see if that would make a difference, but the shed in only 100 square feet and according to specifications it covers up to 200 sq. ft.We might still to see if with a little help, they perform better. Fan inside looked similar to a computer box fan and I personally felt it should have been beefier and wider fan blades.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fan for small spots Installed on a small bathroom bump-out. Works great so far, glad I put it in. In poor sunlight sometimes makes a faint "whining" sound as it needs to sun to spin motor (all solar fans do this), but in full sunlight (after a couple months now) motor broken in and is absolutely quiet. I'd buy it again without hesitation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect application A reasonable price, well made and works under the blazing sun. Couldn't ask for anything more. Installed it on a pitched, shingled, 180 sq ft, attached garage roof in about 2 hours.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Main downside it requires direct full sun to run fan,... Main downside it requires direct full sun to run fan, clouds or any shade and the fan "humms" due to lack of voltage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for small sheds Most exhaust fans are not made for small sheds. This is perfect. My dogs sleep in this shed, and the solar exhaust fan keeps the shed comfortable from the hot desert sun. The fan came with excellent directions, and was professionally constructed. I reviewed all products on the market, and this was the best value for what I needed. I will be purchasing another soon for my small "tool" shed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really pulls the hot air out of the attic space I had added this during a reroof of our doublewide mobile home with the Fabral metal roofing to help pull the heat out of the attic crawl space. The solar fan really pulls the hot air out of the attic space when the sun is full out. But add any clouds at all and it simply stops. I feel it would be a better buy had they added more solar cells for it to operate when the weather is "fair" or "partly cloudy. The temps can still be high during these periods. But otherwise I am happy with the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product Put this in a 20X8X8 building, this thing moves some air. You can hear it running, it's not very loud, more of a hum while its on. Slows down when the clouds come over. Only con would be it doesn't have a switch to turn it off if you wanted to. Other than that it's works very well. Easy to install, I put this on a metal roof.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Weak Small, lightweight plastic fan, only slightly larger than you might find in your old desktop computer. Kind of shocking when you open the box in person, after seeing the picture online. And it is only about 1/2 of the diameter of the vent itself, so isn't capable of moving a lot of air. If you are thinking about buying this (because of the great price) be warned that you either need a very small space to vent, or a LOT of these fans, and they MUST see direct sunlight or won't work at all. It's nice that it's solar powered, but you can get "real" solar fans for attic venting, they just cost a LOT more. If you need to vent a house attic or garage, you will need to bite the bullet and spend more on a much more powerful solar fan. Or go the old fashioned (and way less expensive) route of a wired electric fan. It's also hard to imagine the tiny bearings and motor running this unit will hold up under daily use for very long. We shall see though, since the hole is already in the roof! This would be sufficient for a dog house, or a doll house, but not a large area that really needs ventilation. I added a medium sized electric fan on my small side yard sun room, because on hot days this isn't enough to do the job.
