Can't measure correctly

I see no way this can measure correctly. The tube is 5 in long, marked off as 5 inches. The top has a "funnel top" which will cause it to fill more than one inch for each inch of rain. Can this possibly measure correctly?
Asked by: David
You are correct, it does not accurately measure rainfall amounts

How do you empty it?

Asked by: SSS
easy...it will empty itself with the least amount of wind that blow...the rain gauge piece that attaches to the pole is not steady at all. Just flick it with your finger and it falls right off the little pole!

There should be a disclaimer with this rain gauge - "For decorative use only, not for measurement of rain". As another reviewer mentioned - take the top funnel off, use your dremel to take off the top lip, flip it over and put it back on. Hint - to take off the top funnel - give it a small counterclockwise twist and then wiggle it off. Now it is accurate, good looking and inexpensive.

However, the first time we had a freeze after a rain, the glass broke, rendering the gauge useless. Do NOT buy this unless you are in a climate where it doesn't freeze or you are going to pull it inside before your first frost.

The rain gauge is pretty but the lip around the top picks up more rainfall than what is actually experienced. It approximately doubles that area of rainfall that strikes the gauge. Reasonable thought would be that the printed inch measurements on the glass would be calibrated to off set this. I checked those measurements and they follow a ruler exactly. Therefore, there is no calibration in the printed measurements. I do not like this being sold under the Name "AcuRite" unless there is an explanation about why the lip is there. Maybe it corrects for entrance losses that I have not considered. If there is an explanation, then it should be in the labeling.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY on this Rain Gauge if you want to get a decently accurate rainfall measurement. THIS GAUGE DOES NOT come anywhere close to measuring rainfall accurately. The funnel-like top causes the rain measurement to be almost double what really happened. Yes the decorative funnel top can be removed, with some effort, but it's a design flaw and shouldn't be on there in the first place. Decorative, yes. Useful , NO

Assembles easily from the 3 parts included in the package. I prefer a rain gauge where I can slip the gauge out of the holder to empty it. With this product, one has to pull the entire assembly out of the ground to empty it. This is just an ease of use issue.

It is pretty cheap feeling, though. It would definitely not hold up to rough use. I suppose that wouldn't be an issue for adults, but it comes apart in two pieces when you take it out of the ground.

Although this rain gauge is quite attractive, and I initially chose it for the detailed measurements (in both inches and millimeters) on the gauge itself, it has several flaws. Most significantly, it is tremendously inaccurate in capturing the amount of rainfall. I used another rain gauge that I own for comparison, as well as comparisons to a neighbor's rain gauge readings, and rainfall information from national and local weather. Over the course of several storms, both large and small, this rain gauge has consistently indicated a rainfall more than double what the other sources showed for the same storms. I should note that the other rain gauges and weather information were all very close to each other in rainfall estimates. Secondly, the gauge is screwed into the base, which means that you either have to unscrew it to empty it, which is tedious, or you have to remove the stake from the ground to empty the gauge. Most rain gauges allow you to remove the canister from the unit without having to unscrew it or remove the unit from the ground to empty it.
