This item looks good and is easy to use, but if you want to measure rainfall, it is useless. I did not notice the funnel trim around the top untiI got it home. Thinking they might have somehow allowed for the extra water captured, I checked it against another gauge and local weather reports. It captures way more rain than it should.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Hazelmn Not Accurate. Wish it was, because it is beautiful.
I can't recommend this. I bought, and should have known just by looking at it that it would not be accurate. It typically measure 2x - 3x times the actual rain as reported by local spotters. It has a lip on the top that collects more rain than actually fell. I wish it was accurate, because I have to admit it looks great.

I cannot believe that Home Depot continues to stock this item. The design of this rain gauge due to the funnel top flange is ALWAYS wrong. It will tell you much more rain has fallen than reality. I have tested it. It is a marvelous mass produced aesthetically pleasing inaccurate piece of junk.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by BLC Worst rain gauge ever
Looks nice, but even a decorative rain gauge is only useful if it is accurate. After the first storm curiously measured 2" of rain, I wondered why there weren't more reports of flooding. After the second storm also measured 2" of rain, I installed a second gauge next to this one. During the third storm, this gauge measured 2 1/2", but the second gauge only measured .8" (which matches the local weather station's report). This rain gauge is garbage.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by MomMom So inaccurate
It's very pretty and the price was reasonable, but after dumping it twice in a single day when it was so full, it wouldn't hold another single drop, I wondered if we'd really had 11" of rain in one day. I realized that the decorative trim at the top was funneling water into the gauge. Unless we can figure out a way to cut off that "funnel," it won't be going back in our yard!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by AndyWhiteman Looks nice but is useless with less than 1/2" of rain!
Rain gauge is poorly designed so that I was unable to read any rainfall under 0.5"! I live in a desert area with little rainfall and even 0.1" is considered a heavy rainfall. This product is USELESS in an area of low rainfall!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by r2fish The worst ... unless you don't care if it measure rainfall!
First poster is spot on. Something got lost between design and manufacture. I just "measured" 5 inches where it couldn't have been more than half that. The graduations on the tube part are 1:1, but while the tube is approx 1-5/16 inch diameter it has a rim on top that makes the overall water collection diameter approx 2-3/4 inch. this gives an area ratio between the two of 2.1. That is it potentially collects 2.1 times as much water as it should! But also consider that rim is not a deep cone, but only slopes slightly toward the collection tube. Therefore, some of the rain drops that impact the rim go into the tube, but a portion clearly splashes off of the sides. So it is probably indicating something a little less than twice (versus 2.1) but close to that. Maybe 1.8 or 1.9?
Here is how to fix it. Remove the top, but be careful because while it has a bayonet type of mount it was also glued on! Now it should read accurately. I also think the top was designed to be another base in lieu of the rod if one wanted to set it on a table top as opposed to sticking it in the ground. But somewhere between designing it and assembling it in China or God knows where, that got lost in the translation and they applied the adhesive and mounted it to the top.
C'mon Home Depot! You have an obligation to screen your product much better than this. As it is you are selling absolute junk!!!
