Can't measure correctly

I see no way this can measure correctly. The tube is 5 in long, marked off as 5 inches. The top has a "funnel top" which will cause it to fill more than one inch for each inch of rain. Can this possibly measure correctly?

Answer:
Just remove the funnel like top and the gauge should be accurate. It is a simple bayonet connection just twist and pull.

Answer:
There should be a relationship between the cross-sectional area of the funnel and collector tube. The graduation marks on the tube should account for this relationship.

Answer:
Agree with R2FISH that ratio of diameters is about 2:1; however, that makes the ratio of areas about 4:1 (area is proportional to diameter squared). Product is worthless
Also bought an AcuRite thermometer - It reads about 10 low in the morning and 20 degrees high in the afternoon. Product is worthless.

Answer:
That is correct. This device cannot measure due to a faulty design in which extra water is captured by the aesthetically pleasing copper colored plastic rim. The area ratio of this rim in conjunction with the tube is 2.1 times that of the tube cross section alone and yet measurement graduations on the tube are 1:1 in ratio. Gage will read approximately twice what it should. Simple physical violations in Read More

Rated 2.5 out of 5 by 26 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Rain gauge The other reviews are correct...the gauge is worthless as it is designed. As one person suggested, I took the plastic ring off the top (just twist and pull) and the result is completely accurate. I took it a step further and using my Dremel, I sanded the flange off from the ring and reattached it upside down so the water runs off instead of funneling into it. Looks great and works great! Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by A joke I bought this gauge to replace an old simple glass tube gauge which I could no longer read the markings on. I noted that it read about twice the reported rain fall amounts in the local news. I set up my old gauge next to it and in a recent rain it showed 4.5 inches compared to 2.2 inches in my old gauge. The obvious reason (as noted by other reviewers) is the decorative top that acts as a funnel collecting much more water than the 1.4 inch diameter tube would otherwise gather. Fortunately it is relatively easy to remove the funnel like top. This should render the gauge accurate. I wonder just how many other items we buy are similarly as defective. August 3, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Totally inaccurate Very poor design. The other review are correct. This guage is inaccurate due to the decorative funnel. At least 2x off. Don't waste money on this. September 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by AcuRute rain gauge I like it because it has a metal stake to put into the ground. Unlike the ones that have a suction cup for your window. August 30, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Decorative & Functional, but Cheap Materials I like this Rain Gauge because it is decorative and portable. I like that I can put it in a potted plant on our patio and it looks nice but then I can also pull it out of the pot and move it to where I am running my sprinkler. This way I can gauge how long to run the sprinkler in each location around the yard. They say its best to water about a 1/2" 2x a week or so. Another nice feature is that the beaker twists off of the base for easy emptying, although be careful because it seems a little cheap and easily breakable. August 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not very accurate Looks great. That is as far as it goes. It is not accurate and has to be completely removed from ground to be emptied. Was not a good buy. August 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by NOT ACCURATE I wish I had read the reviews before I made the in store purchase. We just had a tropical storm come through and it showed way higher than a simple pan sitting next to it. NOT ACCURATE June 7, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst rain gauge ever Looks nice, but even a decorative rain gauge is only useful if it is accurate. After the first storm curiously measured 2" of rain, I wondered why there weren't more reports of flooding. After the second storm also measured 2" of rain, I installed a second gauge next to this one. During the third storm, this gauge measured 2 1/2", but the second gauge only measured .8" (which matches the local weather station's report). This rain gauge is garbage. June 16, 2015
