Can't measure correctly

I see no way this can measure correctly. The tube is 5 in long, marked off as 5 inches. The top has a "funnel top" which will cause it to fill more than one inch for each inch of rain. Can this possibly measure correctly?
Asked by: David
You are correct, it does not accurately measure rainfall amounts

I have an old one that I was looking to replace. I kept it up during the last two storms, and the new one measures about 20% more than the older one. The older one, when compared with what is listed as rain fall amounts by the news is pretty accurate!

However, the first time we had a freeze after a rain, the glass broke, rendering the gauge useless. Do NOT buy this unless you are in a climate where it doesn't freeze or you are going to pull it inside before your first frost.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A I think this gauge says it rains a lot more than it really does. Just comparing it to gauges around the same area. Apparently it always rains twice as much at my house than anywhere else in town

There should be a disclaimer with this rain gauge - "For decorative use only, not for measurement of rain". As another reviewer mentioned - take the top funnel off, use your dremel to take off the top lip, flip it over and put it back on. Hint - to take off the top funnel - give it a small counterclockwise twist and then wiggle it off. Now it is accurate, good looking and inexpensive.

It is pretty cheap feeling, though. It would definitely not hold up to rough use. I suppose that wouldn't be an issue for adults, but it comes apart in two pieces when you take it out of the ground.

The top lip collects water that drains into the cylinder and over estimates the rain. Take the top lip off and it may work OK. This product is a waste of money.
