The other reviews are correct...the gauge is worthless as it is designed. As one person suggested, I took the plastic ring off the top (just twist and pull) and the result is completely accurate. I took it a step further and using my Dremel, I sanded the flange off from the ring and reattached it upside down so the water runs off instead of funneling into it. Looks great and works great!

I bought this gauge to replace an old simple glass tube gauge which I could no longer read the markings on. I noted that it read about twice the reported rain fall amounts in the local news. I set up my old gauge next to it and in a recent rain it showed 4.5 inches compared to 2.2 inches in my old gauge. The obvious reason (as noted by other reviewers) is the decorative top that acts as a funnel collecting much more water than the 1.4 inch diameter tube would otherwise gather. Fortunately it is relatively easy to remove the funnel like top. This should render the gauge accurate.
I wonder just how many other items we buy are similarly as defective.

I like it because it has a metal stake to put into the ground. Unlike the ones that have a suction cup for your window.

I like this Rain Gauge because it is decorative and portable. I like that I can put it in a potted plant on our patio and it looks nice but then I can also pull it out of the pot and move it to where I am running my sprinkler. This way I can gauge how long to run the sprinkler in each location around the yard. They say its best to water about a 1/2" 2x a week or so. Another nice feature is that the beaker twists off of the base for easy emptying, although be careful because it seems a little cheap and easily breakable.

Looks great. That is as far as it goes. It is not accurate and has to be completely removed from ground to be emptied. Was not a good buy.

I wish I had read the reviews before I made the in store purchase. We just had a tropical storm come through and it showed way higher than a simple pan sitting next to it. NOT ACCURATE

I was drawn to the guage by the copper coler and design. I was disapointed that you can not take the glass tube out.

Looks nice, but even a decorative rain gauge is only useful if it is accurate. After the first storm curiously measured 2" of rain, I wondered why there weren't more reports of flooding. After the second storm also measured 2" of rain, I installed a second gauge next to this one. During the third storm, this gauge measured 2 1/2", but the second gauge only measured .8" (which matches the local weather station's report). This rain gauge is garbage.
