Suitability for salt water spa pools

Is this floating thermometer suitable for chlorinated salt water spa pools? Our pool normally runs at 40-41 degrees C (105 F) with a salt water chlorinator. Our last unit only lasted 3 months as I later found out through a Google search that the unit was actually unsuitable for salt water pools. I don't want to be caught twice. :) John

Got some plumber's silicon faucet grease, coated the rubber seal liberally, and no more leaking. Now I use the silicon grease on my chlorine feeder and pump strainer basket lid rubber seals as well. Keeps the seals in place, and from drying out, and makes a nice tight but easy to unscrew waterproof connection. Read Less

Answer:
Honestly - it's not suitable for any pool.
In my experience, it leaks horribly around the LCD window and will likely fail within a month or two of having been outside. I've purchased two of them and experienced the same problem with both. There is *no* water seal between the LCD and the clear window. Rain and pool water splash will combine to fill the unit with moisture over time.

Yes but it comes with the indoor monitor as a complete unit, not just a standalone thermometer.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 2.5 out of 5 by 155 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Fix the leaking problem and they have a winner I buy one of these every spring for our pool (last 4 years). The battery compartment inevitably leaks and subsequent water damage destroys the sensor. This year the first one I bought this year leaked straight away; even after trying to seal with silicone it was still dead within two weeks. As long as you know you're probably going to have to replace every year it works well. Never had a problem with range and accuracy seems ok. The good news is that we keep the remote display units every year after we trash the sensor. Now we have multiple sensors around the house and patio that we sync with the new unit every year. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Floating unit is good, but remote display only works within 6 feet of it This seemed like a good value for a digital pool thermometer with a remote display. The floating unit itself is good; no leaks, and its reading agrees closely with the main thermometer back at my pool pump. The problem is the remote display unit... it may be able to establish a link when within a few feet of the floating unit, but then once moved more than about 6 feet away it loses the link. Tried different batteries, re-positioning the unit, etc. but nothing worked. Since the floating unit has its own display it is still useful, but I will likely throw away the remote display. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Acurite Pool Thermometer Product easy to use works great, pool over 100' from my receiver.. Also works with my Acurite Internet Gateway now I can see my Pool Temperature from my phone and computers.... June 22, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not Acurite The pool temperature was reading 159 degrees 24 hrs after installing the batteries June 22, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Inaccurate The unit is well-built and looks nice, but it does not register the correct temperature. Manufacturer's warranty information is unavailable, and attempts to contact them have failed. The real temperature was confirmed with manual thermometers. Acurite shows 99 when the tub is actually 104. Hoped this unit would be better than those cheap units from China that only last a month or two. This one is warrantied for a year but what good is that when the manufacturer won't respond? Guess I will have the wrong temperature for a year. I notice that Acurite thermometers in general are inaccurate. My wireless Indoor/outdoor thermometer is typically 5 degrees wrong. October 28, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by doesn't last long Looks and works fine when new but I've purchased 3 of these units and when water gets chilly it no longer gives the correct reading. I replaced the battery and dried out the interior and replace in water. non of them worked properly after the initial failure !!! This would be a great product if "they" would up-grade the sensor. June 6, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Leaks! This item lasted less than one year. The display unit would not work when it was inside the house, even though it was about 10 feet from the thermometer. Within a few months, water had leaked into the floating unit. We took it apart to get the water out and let it dry, but it was no good. I don't mind spending a little extra if a product is reliable and will last, but now I'm going back to my floating duckie. June 4, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Product only lasts a year As stated in another review, i'm on my 3rd unit as water gets into the unit. Recommendaton, pull the thermometer of the pool when swimming to hopefully keep it dryer. June 1, 2016
