The bottom line is that my first purchase lasted one season and I went through two of these within a month on season two. I too thought that maybe the kids were being rough on the first one but that definitely was not the case this year. To be honest, I have a feeling that these actually leak from the top where the display is, than on the lower part where the battery is (because there is an o-ring there). The problems that I have had include (of course) the leaking of all three, the fact that the direct sun shining on the unit will inflate the temperature reading by several degrees, and the third until would not switch from C to F (however, the remote display is able to be switched to F). If it weren't for the fact that these leak (one clear indicator of that is that it shows the temp to be around 150 degrees), this would be an awesome device. There is a display on the unit in the pool and of course the remote display as well. The remote display provides temperature tracking for the previous week and there are several channels to select in case one frequency is weak. The batteries last a reasonable time (the devices died before the batteries did), and the pool unit synchs up easily to the remote display. In fact, seeing that the other pool units had died, I was using multiple remote displays connected to the one unit in the pool. It is a shame that they cannot master making this device waterproof as it is supposed to be in the water all the time, because otherwise it would be a great product. As is, it is almost as effective as having an umbrella that is not waterproof. I guess the other alternative would be to use it in an indoor pool and of course drain the water out of the pool.

Based on my experience and other reviews I can come to only one conclusion - This thing leaks and will only last anywhere from a few days to one season if you are lucky. It isn't a case where one may leak and another may not, they all do!
Now I may not know much, but if you told me to make a gadget that floats in water, my first objective would be to make sure it doesn't leak. No matter what, if I can't make sure it doesn't leak, then it can't come to market.
The one I bought lasted about a couple Months before it stopped working and I saw water in the screen area. I opened it up and put it in the sun and once dry it worked again with fresh batteries for a few more weeks. I am strong enough and tightened the battery compartment as tight as I could make it. I suspect that the water is coming in from the antenna cover on the top as the screws that hold it are completely rusted.

This is a great way to monitor the pool or lake temperatures. Very accurate and reasonably priced.

I have been looking for a thermometer for my Koi pond so I know how to feed. The convenience of having the reading in the house is a real nice. The in pond thermometers were always a pain to read. I have had no leakage of water into the sensor as mentioned earlier. I did put some silicone grease on the gasket as a precaution. I really like the feature of having the 3 day graph so I can have an easy trending comparison. I have other AcuRite products and have been happy with them. I will be getting a weather station and hope this unit will work as a sensor so I can track any trends of the water temperature to the air temperature. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone with a Koi pond.

The unit is well-built and looks nice, but it does not register the correct temperature. Manufacturer's warranty information is unavailable, and attempts to contact them have failed. The real temperature was confirmed with manual thermometers. Acurite shows 99 when the tub is actually 104. Hoped this unit would be better than those cheap units from China that only last a month or two. This one is warrantied for a year but what good is that when the manufacturer won't respond? Guess I will have the wrong temperature for a year. I notice that Acurite thermometers in general are inaccurate. My wireless Indoor/outdoor thermometer is typically 5 degrees wrong.
