Can this be used with a fence panel instead of using fresh wood to build the gate itself?

I have a fence panel leftover from a privacy fence I put up and would love to simply use that to complete the gate area. Is it possible to do this using this system?
Asked by: Dragonlady
Its not designed for that, and would probably prove difficult, but nothing is impossible.

Will this gate support a 6ft high fence

Asked by: Miller21
Yes, i built a privacy fence at 6' but i wouldn't recommend building the fence over 6' in length

Can you attach fence boards in a horizontal fashion for a more "modern" look? Looks like may need to attach 3-4 vertical ones on top of frame and then put horizontal boards on top of that?
Asked by: JO
You would need to have vertical boards in order to have something to attach the horizontal boards to.

The screws provided, I felt were inadequate for the design of the gate and the weight it must hold. Therefore I drilled some of the holes, hinges, larger and used longer larger lags.

It took two of us about 4 hours to put it together. The gate feels sturdy and opens and closes easily. We are still working on getting the latch to work right, we may have built our gates about 1/2 inch too long and the latch hits the other gate when trying to close it. To fix this without having to rebuild the gates, we are planning on finding another type of latch. We will also be adding a second latch on the bottom to keep the dog's from pushing open the bottom between the two gates. I feel this gate will last many years and I am happy with the quality.

I loved the simplicity of it but the hinges, which aren't really hinges, do not hold the gate steady. It seems like there should be some kind of bushing or sleeve that would go over the post of the hinge to fill the gap so the gate doesn't have so much "play" when it is opened and closed. Please let me know if there is a solution for my problem so I can fix the looseness of the "hinge". The gate kit was so easy to use to build the gate but the "hinge" was a problem.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It works, but not all we hoped it would be Great idea, but hardware not as quality as we were hoping. Paint peels off easy and hoping overall it stands the test of time. The sag cable disconnected from the factory installed clamp where it connects to the turnbuckle. Not the biggest deal as I purchased extra hardware to remedy this. Back to hardware, we wanted to upgrade the latch system, but found it difficult to do so with the type of gate we built and the metal frame. Overall, satisfied, but not wowed.

This is the larger model and I used it to create a 90 in wide gate for a 6' dog-eared fence. Worked beautifully. So easy to install and works much better than the all wood custom gate I was replacing. Start to finish, including adding the fence panels was about 3 hours. I am planning to replace a smaller opening gate with the smaller kit. Highly recommend to all. A surprisingly easy way to replace to add a very nice gate for a DIY'er.

If you are replacing an existing gate, remember you are working within the confines of a the previous build. It may be more difficult to obtain the exact height and width without giving in to the design. The broader you need, the heavier the gate (more material). I had to buy additional hinges to support the weight. It was a question of function vs. appearance. I do recommend the frame, but plan for it carefully.

This product is currently shipping with a known manufacturer's defect (July, 2017). The steel wire that supports the load and keeps the gate from sagging is coated in plastic which cases it to slip out of the crimping and fail (mine lasted a week). The manufacturer is aware of the problem and has not made any moves to recall the defective product. And, the adjustable hook is also a bit flimsy for the amount of load it's asked to bear. Other than that, the included hardware is designed only for 4x4 posts. If you plan to extend the gate a full 96", a 4x4 most is likely not stout enough to bear the load so you will be stuck either finding other hinges (which is what I did--using lag bolt hinges designed for chain link fencing) or dealing with a gate that's out of alignment. And, if you are installing a 6" tall gate, consider getting the three-bar kit to better support the longer pickets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the extra bucks Thicker metal than the lesser priced gate products. Packaged well and instructions are clear. Had no difficulty installing. No experience or interest in house maintenance, but the end product results were excellent. Good buy
