Multiple openings/closings of the water valve during intial fill- is this normal?

When filling the tub with water to start a load, my washer constantly switches from a fast flow to a slow flow, regardless of water temperature or wash setting. This means that the inlet valve is consistently opening and closing on the unit, causing my water pipes to vibrate and causing a "banging" sound. Is this operation normal for this washer? My previous washer (of a different model) would fill smoothly and shut the valve off once when the tub was full, this one seems to open & close the valve multiple times during the fill.
Asked by: SteveR
I do hear it opening and shutting throughout the cycle as well, but I'm not having the same water pipe issue. We had a similar problem with our pipes a few years ago whenever our sprinkler system would turn on in the mornings. We found out that it was air in the line. Once we got that taken care of, we didn't have the vibration or banging sound. You may want to call a trusted plumber and have your lines looked at - it could be a sign of a bigger problem.

3.4 cu. ft. Top Load Washer in White is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 1665.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It does the job-and that's saying a lot these days. I replaced a two year old Maytag Centennial with this machine. After suffering for two years with that horrible Maytag (which finally became completely useless), I bought this one. I didn't want to spend too much after my experience with the Maytag because I figure if they are going to break in two years why pay a premium. The difference is amazing. Unlike the Centennial, this one starts filling immediately (rather than long minutes of "sensing"). The wash cycle is quick and I can run three times the number of loads in the same amount of time as with the old one. It works well. Quiet enough. And did I say, It works!???

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Basic Washer that Does the Job When my 12 year old Whirlpool Ultimate Care II died, I braced myself for having to spend $500 or more for a new machine. I was pleasantly surprised to find this Admiral on sale for $299. It is identical to a Roper or Amana and has only the most basic of features. As a single, middle-aged professional guy, I don't need one of those machines that look like the dashboard on the Space Shuttle. I've had to get used to the sounds this thing makes -- VERY weird hums and whirrs. But the bottom line is that I put in detergent and dirty clothes, push a button, and 1 hour later (yes, it does take twice as long as my old machine) I pull out clean clothes. That's is all that I want from a washing machine, and this one delivers. Very Cool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for a single guy like me .. I bought this washer after the one in my house croaked .. I didn't want to spend a fortune, so I started reading reviews. Turns out that this model was very highly rated .. Only cons were some odd noises it makes. Overall I have been very pleased .. Also having it delivered for free was a nice bonus. If you just want to get the laundry done, and don't need 88 bells and whistles then this bad boy is for you

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great machine for the price! I read some of the BAD reviews this machine got and hesitated, but needed a new machine ASAP and didn't have much money. For $299, set up, delivered, and the old one hauled away, this was a GREAT bargain. I don't know why anyone says it's slow, my laundry is getting done in the same amount of time as always. As for the locking lid, if you read the instructions, it tells you how to unlock it. If you don't like the "spray rinse" all you have to do is use a different cycle. In other words....read the manual, and you'll have NO problems!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Product Loyalty Many years ago while I was serving in the Navy we needed to buy a washer. We went to the nearest department store which was Montgomery Wards. We selected a washer we could afford. The machine performed flawlessly during the time we owned it. We took the machine with us to various duty stations. Once I actually had to roll the machine into and out of a mobile home we owned. After discharge from the service we brought this machine with back to civilian life. After experiencing flooding in our basement we needed to replace the washer. Water had gotten into the transmission. We went to the Montgomery Wards in the city we lived and said we wanted the exact same machine we had gotten at one of their stores years earlier. They said the Montgomery Wards brand washer was no longer available but that it had been made by Admiral and showed us the one they offered. I noticed that the controls were identical to the old one we had and bought it. Again, this Admiral washer lasted twenty-five years. The springs that stabilize the tub became weak and the tub would unbalance frequently during the spin cycle. I tried but was unsuccessful in replacing them so we bought another Admiral washer but this time from Home Depot. Montgomery Wards no longer exists. This washer is now in service and based on our experience with this brand expect to get many years of reliable service from it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Buy! The old washer lasted 15+ years, but was needing $150 in parts and my time to attempt the repair; so we decided to buy this model. It was big enough for just the wife and I. All though being .2 cubic ft smaller, the wife says she gets more clothes in it than the old one; reason being it has a deeper tube than the old one, so don't let the 3.6 cu. ft scare you off this machine. Someone said this washer does not have a warm cycle... it does. It is a little noisier than the old one, but not offensively loud. From a guys standpoint, I can do without the bells and whistles to break and need repair; and the wife said it does what she wants, it gets the cloth clean without having to mop the floor. Enough said...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This is about the most basic washer available today, which is what I wanted. I wanted a basic washer and found this model to be a good price. I CAREFULLY read the instruction manual and became familiar with new features. I have had no problem with the locking lid. I found that if I press and release the 'Pause' button BETWEEN cycles or while the machine is filling with water which takes close to 10 minutes (plenty of time to add extra clothing), it immediately unlocks. If I hold the 'Pause' button in for several seconds it cancels the cycle and drains the water (just as the manual states). There are unusual sounds which I have gotten used to. My clothes come out very clean. For those having problems, I recommend you again read the instruction manual.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product for the price While the features on this machine are fairly basic, it's a great machine for the price. I especially like the progress lights instead of the old mechanical timer dial. The cancel feature automatically pumps out the water but the pause feature allows for pre-soaking. These are manual functions but are missing on some other basic models. Overall a great value.
