I have had this for 8 years. Another person said the control handle closes. It has a stop nut to tension the lever. Simply tighten the nut to hold in place. I use this to put out Millet, Oats and clay peas for the critters. Then I plow in. This spreader works great for this!! I now have 5 deer plots.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Charles M Great Drop Spreader, but!!!!
This is a great drop spreader, but it won't hold 175 lbs., of product, and the release gear closes on it's own, but after it was secured with a bungee cord, it worked perfectly.

This drop spreader is perfect for my yard and pasture. The grass seed and fertilizer spread is easy to control and the bin holds exacty what I need. Also, refilling the bin, when necessary,is easy and quick. It's shortened my maintenance work tremendously.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by MNLawnGuy It's built pretty solid for a non professional drop seeder
It worked great. It's built fairly solid. I use it for over-seeding in my yard.
Assembly was similar to other attachments I've bought. It took me about 2 hours, which is normal for me when assembling lawn mower attachments. I thought the directions were pretty easy and straight forward. If you are not mechanically inclined, I recommend having it shipped to the store and have Home Depot assemble it for you.
I do not recommend having it delivered to your home. Like other attachments I've bought from Home Depot and had shipped, the box came fairly beaten up; the items inside had scratches and minor dents. I recommend delivering it to the store so that if this happens, you can deal with the situation at the store.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by bluebird Does excellent job. I recommend it for anyone.
We used it one time on a very large uneven yard. it worked good reguardless of the uneven ground. We just hooked it up to a hydrostat lawn mower and took off. It put out the weed and feed more evenly than a rotating spreader ever has. After having bought it several friends also bought one.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Stick very good & effective spreader
Actually took me about an hour to assemble, but went together as described. Used only once so far to spread a mix of lime and fertilizer over my lawn. One change I made, important to me, was to add a 1 7/8 hitch to the tongue in place of the pin drop style. I have a ball on my ATV for all of my tow-behinds. Will be spreading much lime and deer plot seed soon.

It took about 30 mins. to assemble. Not too bad for an 80 year old male. It does an excellent job of spreading fertilizer and lime. Haven't tried it yet to spread grass seed. I like it much better than the non drop spreaders. I would give it a 5 Star plus rating. It does cost a bit, but if you take care of it, it should last you a life time.
