Thing about this puppy is that it has four brushes, two sets on the same axle, offset at 90 deg, and each set overlapping about two inches. The brushes are long and stiff... Basically, at the speed ya wanna tow it, and your height setting, there should always be a brush in the grass. That translates to very close to constant load, which is what this thing feels like when towing it; at whatever speed ya like... It's an impressive cascade of clippings into the catcher... And it dumps soooo freakin easy.... Read Less

Yes, it will and does, very nicely. It also picks up pine needles nicely, too.
With cones, set brush depth to be barely the lawn height, and keep speed to medium at best.

Are the gears on the drive wheels made of plastic or metal?

This question is from 44 in. 25 cu. ft. Tow-Behind Lawn Sweeper

Most lawn sweepers use plastic wheels with a plastic gear on the inside that engages a much smaller gear to spin the brush. Some of them hold up okay, others strip out in a few uses. Having a rough or uneven lawn tends to make most sweepers lock up and stresses the gears--causing premature failure.

I recently purchased a new Agri-Fab 44 " model 45-04921, and took a wheel off to look at the construction. What concerns me, is the plastic inserts they call wheel bearings. Moveover, I checked the price for these parts online, and they are 3.04 for each piece. Each of the two wheels uses two of these "wheel bearings". The website also stated that no other models used these parts. This concerns me, because I really wonder about the durability of these plastic parts being used in a potentially hard use area of the sweeper. If the parts wear out fast, they are pricey, for soft plastic parts, and if they become not available, the sweeper will be scrap.

Plastic ring gear, part of the molded wheel assembly. Meshes with metal drive gear for the brushes. Plastic gear on wheel is definitely the weak link and IMHO will fail. Both wheels drive, ratcheting gear on brushes. Expect to replace a wheel at around $40 each annually.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I like it! I have used this sweeper several times now and am quite happy with it. After reading other reviews, I was concerned about the plastic gear, but it seems solid to me. I think using it at slower speeds (as recommended by the manufacturer) solves the problem of stripping it out. It picks up grass and leaves well, holds a lot and is amazingly easy to empty. I tried offsetting the hitch to sweep while mowing, but my John Deere shoots the clippings too far for the sweeper to get most of them. I just quickly go over the lawn after I'm done mowing and it really only adds about 15 minutes to my job. I was debating between buying a bagger or a sweeper, and I'm glad I went with the sweeper. It has way more capacity and I don't have to worry about it plugging up. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing Works very well when grass kept short... Not so good cutting tall grass... Gets plugged up... August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So far so good In reading the reviews of this sweeper many people said it was hard to assemble. Suggestion. In the parts book are pictures of each part. Sort the parts out first and arrange them in stacks in the order as pictured in the book. When you start assembling it will tell you which stack of parts to look into for the needed and things will go together quickly. I bought it in July to collect leaves in October. I'll let you know then how good it works. August 4, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by great quality easy to assemble; works great. the only issue I have is the arm to dump is too short to reach from my seat on my Hustler ZT mower. August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product Put together by myself in about an hour. Good directions for the most part. I have about an acre of centipede grass and after mowing I went back over with sweeper and it picked up all the clippings. Adjusting the wheel height was a little difficult but once you get it correct the sweeper works perfect. Emptying the swept clippings into my compost pile was a breeze. Great product and built well. Should last many years, August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Agri 44 inch tow behind sweeper Very quick delivery. Very good price. Fairly easy assembly. Best of all, does what it is advertised to do, i.e. sweep clean. Set the sweeper to it's lowest setting and it cleared my driveway of leaves, pine needles and cone. Set it between #2 and #3 and it did likewise to my lawn. The biggest challenge is to back up my zero turn to the desired location to dump the sweepings. I expect the sweeper will get quite a work out this Fall. So far, so good, July 5, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Returning to store The sweeping action works great. The containment portion of the sweeper is too light weight and will not hold the volume it claims though. After only using it less than a week, I have holes in the bottom hopper and the tension rods in the back of the hopper have fallen out. The description claims you can dump the hopper from the seat of your tractor. You can only do that if it is less than half full. Otherwise the weight it too much to do it from the tractor seat and you have to get off to pull the lever. The offset set up (if you use it) is not enough for me. The offset is no more than two feet, which is much less than what my side discharge mower deck throws the clippings. June 21, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works as advertised Rapid delivery. Fairly easy assembly. Lowest setting cleans my asphalt driveway (a plus). Still experimenting with correct settings for lawn. Sweeps pine needles, cones, leaves, grass clippings and small fallen branches. Only issue is unloading. Not an equipment issue, a "space" where to issue. July 19, 2016
