Customer Questions & Answers

Does each spool assembly turn independently?

If not, do you need to raise the unit to make turns?
Asked by: DD1955
Dear DD1955 - Thank you for inquiring about the Agri-Fab plug aerator for your lawn care needs. The spools turn independently allowing free turning. There is a video available that shows the aerator in operation, Agri-Fab recently made some changes to the aerator but the spools still work the same.

Dear Lawnlover - Thank you for inquiring about the Agri-Fab plug aerator for your lawn care needs. The plug aerator can be towed behind any lawn and garden tractor that will accept a rear hitch pin. Please note whey towing any attachment behind a zero turn mower you must not drive any faster than 3 mph and make wide turns.

HP to pull Aerator

What horse power engine should I expect to use for adequately pulling the aerator, especially with 140 lbs of extra weight? I have an old rear engine mower that does have a tow bar acceptor on the back. I use a single-gang, reel mower most of the year to adequagtely cut Bermuda grass to the lower, consistant height requirements. The engine is only a 12 HP Briggs & Stratton.

I used a 15 HP zero turn.It work fine.

Customer Reviews

48 in. Tow Plug Aerator is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 156.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked as Advertised But Also missing parts. I bought this aerator from Rural king and it worked but I sliced my hand on the sharp blades. No complaints there just a warning to be careful! More importantly I was missing 8 5/16 nylon nuts that fit the blades. Instructions said I should have had 40. I had 32. 32 were used for the blades and remaining 8 used for the main deck to attach to the sides. Also broke a bolt during assembly. I had a replacement for it. I also broke another one during use which is the bolt that attaches the lift handle to the main shaft while trying to lift the blades up. Two broken bolts and 8 missing nuts. Not entirely happy with my purchase but will continue to use again next year to get my lawn in shape. I was tired off borrowing a friends aerator.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from AGRI-FAB vs. BRINLY-HARDY AGRI-FAB 48" (wider than Brinly): 13 gauge steel box (thicker than Brinly) 12 gauge steel knives (thicker than Brinly) The square plates have 4 "spot-welds" to attach them to the spindles. (worse than Brinly). Spindles rotate on plastic split bearings. Pneumatic tire pressure is adjustable. 3-year warranty (better than Brinly) Agri-Fab did not respond to repeated e-mail inquiries for technical information. BRINLY-HARDY 40": 14 gauge steel box 16 gauge steel knives The square plates are welded 360 degrees around each spindle. Spindles rotate on plastic bushings. Tires are semi-pneumatic; not inflated and can not adjust pressure. 2-year warranty Brinly customer service was much more responsive to questions via e-mail.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well Assembled well no problems, all the parts were there, used it with 4 cinder blocks and it pulled nice 1/2" x 1" to 2" plugs. On assembly I read that someone put the blades on last instead of 1st step, I also put blades on last saves from getting your hands cut.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from snapped in half after six uses Today was the sixth time I've used this aerator in about two years to aerate our acre-sized lawn, and it broke in half in the middle of my yard! The tongue broke/bent and the bracket underneath sheared off causing one of the wheels (which were up at the time because I was using it to aerate) to fall off. No, I didn't have it loaded with 500 pounds or something. Just the four concrete blocks it says you can put on. It has always done an ok job up till now, but I'm not happy with it at all after this. It's sitting on the scrap pile waiting to go to the junk yard. It supposedly has a three year warranty, so we'll see if they honor that or not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Customer Support I purchased the 48" Plug Areator, went together easily. Once it was together I discovered the wheels would not raise the plug knives high enough to clear the ground in transport position. I checked that I put it together correctly, which I did.. I called the toll free support line and talked with Vicky( very nice and efficient) I explained the problem I had, she told me the shaft was mis-drilled and they would send me a replacement which arrived at my home in a few days. Although I was not happy about having the problem in the first place, I was extremely pleased how quickly Agri-Fab responded to solve the problem. Well Done! Thanks

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great quality aerator i have nothing but good things to say about my agri fab tow plug aerator . the aerator was delivered to the house in an extra heavy cardboard box. i really enjoyed the assembly , the instruction were very easy to follow. i would recommend using a work bench to assemble the plug cutters onto the axle.good advice where a long sleeve shirt and work gloves ! those cutters are sharp !!!then use the shipping carton for assembling the weight box . this way when you call the wife out to the shed to show it off it will look real nice . now for the operation . hooked it up to the riding mower and made a few laps around the yard , with the cutters in the raised position. i did that just to make sure the lever stays engaged. worked good don't want to aerate any concrete ! next released the lever and did a lap without weight . pulled out 1' plugs .finally i loaded the weight tray with 2 concrete flower pots . oh yea remember that shipping carton ? cut it into 2 pieces that will fit in the tray. this way your plug tiller will not get scratched up .well with the added weight the plug tiller turned into a hole plugging monster about 2inches deep. it pulled nice and didn't have any rattles or squeaks. in my opinion this is one of the best well built products you can still purchase that is still made in the USA .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's worth buying The assembly is straight forward with the exception of the four bolts in the tray that have "two spacers each" with no explanation as to why. They are there to prevent cinder blocks or "weights" from sliding around and interfering with the lever that raises or lowers the wheels. (the instructions don't tell you this) I bought a rubber matte and cut it up to fit both sides of the tray so that the cinder blocks would not move around and secured the mattes with silicone. I used the leftover mat material to cover the cinder blocks so the cinch strapping I used would not be abraded contacting the blocks. (Nothing moves!) Performance: For my lawn 70 Lbs of weight resulted in 1.5" plugs. I'm very happy with that depth. I would suggest connecting it to the tractor, with no weights and then add then add the weights. It is very heavy on its own and the center if gravity is short. Believe me, do it this way. The plug cutters are very sharp and be safe by having it connected to the tractor before adding weights.. Ease of use:: Once it's connected its great. (See above) Value/Convenience: It's well made, works very well, I'm happy with it. A unit this size/weight is a problem to rent and transport. The performance of this unit is great but, storing at home could be a problem. But, if you can store it where it's needed it's a bargain compared to the alternatives.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good overall -- wheels not as pictured and described Overall, this aerator is well built with thick strong steel, except for the tow bar. The wheels packed with mine are not as pictured on line, on the box, in the assembly instructions, nor as described (see photos). They are described and shown to be 10" round by 4" wide with a wide looking turf tread, but mine are only 3" wide with a narrow, rounded, wheelbarrow-like tread. They ARE pneumatic, and do have bearings, but are far narrower and cheaper looking than expected. The tow bar is surprisingly light weight and of thin gauge metal, compared to the rest of the aerator. While I expect it to work fine in normal forward use, I would NOT recommend backing up even a little bit while aerating, or it may bend or fold as described by another reviewer. The box arrived in poor condition with several holes, damaged from the inside by the sharp contents tossed freely around inside -- perhaps the manufacturer should bind them together with some fiberglass packing tape, or indiviually box some of the contents within the box. The hardware parts bag was also torn open, but surprisingly, all of the small parts from it were found rolling around somewhere within the box -- none were missing. Overall I expect the aerator to work well, but I deduct some quality points due to the lower-grade wheels, and the somewhat thinly made tow bar.
