HP to pull Aerator

What horse power engine should I expect to use for adequately pulling the aerator, especially with 140 lbs of extra weight? I have an old rear engine mower that does have a tow bar acceptor on the back. I use a single-gang, reel mower most of the year to adequagtely cut Bermuda grass to the lower, consistant height requirements. The engine is only a 12 HP Briggs & Stratton.

Maybe a little under powered. I use a 22HP, and could definite feel it pull quite hard on an uphill grade.

How far apart are the pulled plugs?

Asked by: BillS
No I asked how far apart they are not how deep the individual plug is. What I was referring to is the tines are "X" number of inches apart and on each tine they are "Y" inches apart. Think of plotting it on a graph paper. So it will produce "X" number of holes per square foot.

48 in. Tow Plug Aerator is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 204.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Plug Aerator I purchased this aerator late last Summer rather than renting one from home Depot. I have compacted soil with a high clay content and I need to aerate each year, then over seed. I picked this aerator since I can easilly get replacement parts for it since the aeration spikes on other manufacturer models I have used tended to break off. The only improvement that I can suggest is I would like this aerator to have an auxiliary hitch point so I can attach and drag a spring-tine de-thatcher behind it so the plugs can be broken up as I go instead of running the de-thatcher separately.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good quality, would perfer rubber tires Bought it late fall of last year, a little hairy putting together, had it up on a table with my wife helping me assemble, the wheels were already on and I was tightening nuts and bolts when it decided to roll off her side of the table. She grabbed for it and I did as well and she just missed cutting her arm on the razor type spikes. That could of been bad. Otherwise it's made of good quality and seems to do a fairly good job. The other thing, if you have any back problems, it's alittle hard grabbing for the lever that raises the wheels when you go over concrete, if they would design a better handle that's closer to your body without turning around it would make life alot simpler. I quess you get what you pay for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rare quality. Solid. Built to last a long time. Prior to purchasing the Agr Fab product, I made a bad purchase of a competing product. I purchased a big box store brand name plug aerator that was the best they had available. Some of the metal bracing was so thin, I could bend it with my bare hands. I returned that poor quality, brand name aerator to the big box store. Fortunately, in another store, I found the Agri Fab Plug Aerator. This aerator is well designed to do the heavy lifting required. And best yet, I could never bend any part of this Aerator with my bare hands.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does a good job The assembly was a little more time consuming then I thought it would be, this is not a problem though. Once I had it assembled and hooked it up it worked fine. Keep in mind with this little amount of weight the ground really needs to be moist in order to get the job you really want. I would suggest that they make the handle a more accessible from the tractor so you don’t have to get off the tractor each time you need to raise or lower the tines. Also, extend the tire lift a little longer so the tines don't drag on the driveway.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very heavy duty piece of equipment Reading online reviews made me apprehensive, but remembering my satisfaction with the 3 Agri-Fab items I still use, I went ahead with the purchase. I am not disappointed. The owners manual is very precise & easy to follow. All of the parts were in the box and undamage. Everything went together without a hitch. Loaded 75 lbs. of concrete blocks on top, which gave about a 1" to 1.5" plug depth. When I was done, the aerator knives clean out very easily. Glad I made the purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Used this aerator a day after it rained. Plugs were close to 2 inches with 109 lbs of paver blocks which were strapped down with heavy duty black bungees. Don't put weights close to the maximum or the tongue will crack which happened on an aerator I used years ago. The tires work good but I prefer inflatable tires which did not come with the product that's why I gave it 4 stars. The tines are good quality and occasionally you will have to put a file to them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product The assembly instructions are very clear. All parts and hardware were there. Probably had it put together in 30 minutes or less. It looks and feels high quality and durable. I loaded it down with the maximum weight and it worked well. I am a little weary of transporting it across terrain at a decent speed with it loaded down. The bolts that support the wheels and lever to the bar are not super big. Bottom line: I would recommend this to a friend.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 48" PLug Aerator I bought your 48" plug aerator, spent time putting it together. Cut the dickens out of my hands, because I did not wear gloves. After assembling I put it to work. I found it did well in pulling out 2-3 inch plugs. It did not turn corners well. It cut the ground instead of plunging. I think that the tongue needs to be longer. Plus the tray that holds the 6 concrete block weights need to be longer because of the bolts holding it together.
