HP to pull Aerator

What horse power engine should I expect to use for adequately pulling the aerator, especially with 140 lbs of extra weight? I have an old rear engine mower that does have a tow bar acceptor on the back. I use a single-gang, reel mower most of the year to adequagtely cut Bermuda grass to the lower, consistant height requirements. The engine is only a 12 HP Briggs & Stratton.
Asked by: Anonymous
Maybe a little under powered. I use a 22HP, and could definite feel it pull quite hard on an uphill grade.

How far apart are the pulled plugs?

Asked by: BillS
No I asked how far apart they are not how deep the individual plug is. What I was referring to is the tines are "X" number of inches apart and on each tine they are "Y" inches apart. Think of plotting it on a graph paper. So it will produce "X" number of holes per square foot.

48 in. Tow Plug Aerator is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 173.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Plug Aerator I purchased this aerator late last Summer rather than renting one from home Depot. I have compacted soil with a high clay content and I need to aerate each year, then over seed. I picked this aerator since I can easilly get replacement parts for it since the aeration spikes on other manufacturer models I have used tended to break off. The only improvement that I can suggest is I would like this aerator to have an auxiliary hitch point so I can attach and drag a spring-tine de-thatcher behind it so the plugs can be broken up as I go instead of running the de-thatcher separately.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good quality, would perfer rubber tires Bought it late fall of last year, a little hairy putting together, had it up on a table with my wife helping me assemble, the wheels were already on and I was tightening nuts and bolts when it decided to roll off her side of the table. She grabbed for it and I did as well and she just missed cutting her arm on the razor type spikes. That could of been bad. Otherwise it's made of good quality and seems to do a fairly good job. The other thing, if you have any back problems, it's alittle hard grabbing for the lever that raises the wheels when you go over concrete, if they would design a better handle that's closer to your body without turning around it would make life alot simpler. I quess you get what you pay for.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 48" PLug Aerator I bought your 48" plug aerator, spent time putting it together. Cut the dickens out of my hands, because I did not wear gloves. After assembling I put it to work. I found it did well in pulling out 2-3 inch plugs. It did not turn corners well. It cut the ground instead of plunging. I think that the tongue needs to be longer. Plus the tray that holds the 6 concrete block weights need to be longer because of the bolts holding it together.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from DOES WHAT IT SUPPOST TO! I bought this Oct 16 and immediately aerated my one acre of grass and winterized it with a weed and feed. Heaviest winter snow in 70 yrs here, grass was covered for over two months (not normal in this area). After the melt my grass looked really good! Because of the snow compacting my grass and ground, I just aerated for the spring and my neighbor did his yard. Our usage has more than made up for the cost of the aerator!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from AGRI-FAB vs. BRINLY-HARDY AGRI-FAB 48" (wider than Brinly): 13 gauge steel box (thicker than Brinly) 12 gauge steel knives (thicker than Brinly) The square plates have 4 "spot-welds" to attach them to the spindles. (worse than Brinly). Spindles rotate on plastic split bearings. Pneumatic tire pressure is adjustable. 3-year warranty (better than Brinly) Agri-Fab did not respond to repeated e-mail inquiries for technical information. BRINLY-HARDY 40": 14 gauge steel box 16 gauge steel knives The square plates are welded 360 degrees around each spindle. Spindles rotate on plastic bushings. Tires are semi-pneumatic; not inflated and can not adjust pressure. 2-year warranty Brinly customer service was much more responsive to questions via e-mail.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Junk! Poorly made and with cheap components and thin steel. Hitch folded like a cheap card table, nylon bearings on tine axle wore out after 1 use. After installing brass bushings, grease zerks and reinforcing hitch, it works but will not hold up. My be OK for homeowner for 1 use per year, but not well built and won't last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from easy assembly I'm a do-it yourselfer and assembly took me less than two hours. The pluggers or cutter knives were very heavy duty and very sharp. Read other online reviews that said they had missing parts. The only problem I had was 4 to many 3/8 by 1" bolts and nuts.I needed 4-5/16 by 1" bolts and nuts instead. Overall a nice plugger.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from works well Product works really well and so far has held up nicely, only thing i would change is the tongue. If used on a 4-wheeler or my Walker MB lawnmower the hitch is too low and I must fabricate an adapter so the bricks or weights sit level and provide a better puncture into the soil.
