I do. I drink my tap water and use it for whatever. I have no need for filters or additives in the use of this humidifier.

Will this unit need weekly maintenance to prevent mold?

I was reading and it seems the weekly cleaning is for minerals. If you don't let the unit dry out will mold develop? I'm looking for something that require no maintenance when using filtered water.
Asked by: niko1978
If using filtered water there is no need to clean weekly. I use mine for about 3 months each year and the only thing to clean is the white dust deposited on and around the machine. I then clean and dry the unit to store until the next winter.

Can I add a few drops of essential oil into this unit ? I'd like to use it as a diffuser as well.

No. It will ruin the ionizer.

My cat was entranced by it, sitting for hours watching the steam and jumping at the bubbles and then knocked it over and the tank cracked badly. Not cat proof.

My comparison is mainly with the Crane 8065 ultrasonic humidifier. I gave it 3 stars as it does not have a continuously adjustable knob for humidity, humistat is not accurate so timer is useless, does not turn off immediately, will not remember the humidity setting when turned on (with unit still plugged). 1) With medium setting it only runs for 3 nights (9-10 hr each). The 70 hours claim is for low setting. But at this setting the unit hardly puts out any moisture. So I am not surprised if it gives 70hrs. It is pointless to run this at low setting. For me the medium is a bit too much as I see condensation on the window the next morning. I would prefer a continuously adjustable knobs as with the Crane 8065. 2) It is not as quiet as other rave about. Compared to the Crane 8065 out of the box, this is louder. But the Crane 8065 started making a loud grinding sound after a couple of months. The general complaint in all these humidifiers is that the unit becomes loud after some use. It is obviously due to cheap parts made in China. Will see if this also gets louder. Now it is not very bothersome as it is not totally a high pitch whining sound. It is like a mixture of high pitch and low pitch fan white noise. High pitch content is less. 3) This unit is probably made by the same manufacturer but sold as a different brand as the black nebulizer looks the same as Crane and the molding of the base and top also look similar. If you shopped for jackets at Macy's or Kohls you will see that they all look the same but with a different brand name. So I will not be surprised if the humidifier parts are all made by the just one or two manufacturers in China. 4) The on/off button does not turn off the unit immediately. It runs the fan for 10mins and then turns off. Makes no sense as this is not a heater to cool off before shutting down. I found this out only after I buying a second unit as I thought the first one was defective. 5) The humidistat is useless as it is not accurate. How do I know? Because when I put the 2 units side by side, one read 35% and the other read 41%. Also it read 35% all night. So even if I had used the auto-off feature and set the humidity at a higher value, it would have run all night. These features are useless if the humidity cant be measured accurately and reliably. 6) Every time I turn off and turn on, it defaults to the low setting. So I have to set it to medium again. Where as with the Crane, it is a mechanical switch with a continuously adjustable humidistat knob (but no display). I like that feature as I plug the unit to a timer to turn on at 8pm and go off at 5am. Just look at it once in 2-3 days to refill. I cant do that with the MH-509 7) Using distilled water every day is going to be expensive as you are not supposed to use tap water. The demineralization cartridges are like $9 a piece. Dont know how long they will last. Those for the Crane 8065 last for some 30-40 days. If the Crane 8065 had not gotten louder, I would have given that 5 starts and bought more of them. Time will tell if the Air Innovations MH509 will get louder. They are all cheap stuff made in China and made to last just for the warranty period They know this is seasonal and people only use it for a few months. In all probability the next season it will be out of warranty period. BTW Amazon took the Crane 8065 out, most likely due to all the negative reviews. Since MH509 is mainly a QVC product it is not very popular in Amazon. It is also not selling as hot cakes in Homedepot in spite of displaying these models right in the main walkway.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quiet and clean!!! We tried ultrasonic humidifiers years ago. We loved how quiet they were but we were plagued by the white dust that they emitted due to our hard water. You could use a resin cartridge to soften the water, but you had to hunt down the right cartridge for your humidifier model several times a season and the models changed regularly. So we returned to the loud fan type humidifier with the disposable fiber filters. They work fairly well, but they make a lot of noise and you have to replace the fiber filter regularly. This unit has a permanent ceramic filter that prevents the white dust from occurring and it's even quieter than the original ultrasonic units. It's virtually silent. It also displays the humidity level and enables you to adjust its output accordingly. We leave it running 24/7 this time of year so I have no need for the timer, but it has one. The only negative aspect is that, although there is a handle on the bottom of the tank to hold when filling, there is no handle on the top of the tank. So it's a little clumsy to remove when you want to add water. Aside from that minor issue, it's a huge improvement over any humidifier we've ever used. Strongly recommended.

Pros: We heat with wood and this adds a nice amount of moisture to the air, also it's very quiet with lots of features and no filter to replace. Cons: There is no where to grip the the housing so removing it from the base is a pest when you need to refill with water. Also the top of the housing is curved so when you want to fill it you can't stand it up alone you must hold onto it when you fill it with water. Other than that no problems. Overall I' pretty happy with it and despite the design flaws I would buy it again.

I've purchased several over the years and this one has all of the features that you'd want. It has four levels of mist output, a digital humidistat that ranges from 35% to 95%, delayed start, sleep timer, and the ability to dim the front panel display. The unit uses standard tap water and has a filter that's easily changed. The unit holds a gallon which lasts 24 hours when on the 75% mist setting. The power cord is standard length allowing positioning on a table or dresser.

The reading was st... returned after one week because it no longer read the room humidity properly. The reading was stuck at 91 which was impossible since we were still having issues with dryness. We have a humidistat in our room that was reading 33 but the humidifier wouldn't work since it was reading the humidity at above the level we set it for which was the highest setting. Getting tired of trying to find a good humidifier that is quiet. Spent a lot of time last winter on this same search. Still no satisfying results.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Just bought, going right back I literally just bought this. I have had many humidifiers over these years, and was excited to try one that does a bit more than just turn on and off. Opened, dumped a gallon of distilled water in, pluged it in and turned it on. Then I turned it off. It does NOT turn off! You can see if turn it on with the tank off that it stops moving the water, but, it still hums like it is on and if you place your hand over the output you can feel mist.I unplugged it thinking there must be a button or something I'm missing. read the manual. nope. It says plug it in, hit the on button and to turn it off hit it again. So I plugged it back in. no hum, no mist. turned it on, all good. turned it off. Humming and misting while it is "off". I don't know if this one is just defective or if this is a serious design flaw. Either way, it's going back and I'm going back to the basic with just an on and off switch.
