What is meant by "flush" with the ceiling

You install the mounting bracket such that the fan body is flush with the top of the drywall, or the bottom?
Asked by: Bill
The instructions are wrong. If you attach the bracket so the bottom of the bracket is flush with the ceiling (in the bathroom), the cover will flop around and not cover the hold. The bracket should be 1/4 inch above the bathroom ceiling, or about halfway the width of the sheetrock.

Decided on two because the product actually performs well. The problem is the way the product is described here, the installation "documentation," and the engineering of the product. The product description here states "A bath fan installation can now be done in minutes." Now, this is true in the sense that a year is 525,600 minutes. However, this is not an easy installation, and until I see a video of someone actually doing it without needing ceiling repair, I won't believe it can be done anywhere but from above. That's because the vent attachment point (even when removed, still adds an inch to the width of the fan. The bracket you have to attach the unit to joist does not allow you any way the tilt the unit, so short of cutting a larger hole, it won't happen. Furthermore, both the fans I installed were tilted so the far edge of the fan was above the ceiling sheetrock. The first one I had to shim the bracket to level the fan. The second wasn't bad enough to require that. BTW, I checked the second joist to make sure it was square, and it was. This is an engineering problem. Finally, the unit should not be mounted flush with the ceiling (as the instructions state) or your shade will flop around and not cover the hole. Of course the "instructions" avoid telling you this by abbreviating the actual installation of the fan to "Snap the fan body into the bracket." Much easier said than done. If, even after reading this, you decide to buy this product, here are some tips with the installation: Trace the unit (for hole size) with the bracket on the unit. Otherwise the hole will be too small. Position the bracket 1/4 inch above the ceiling (middle of sheetrock) so the shade will tighten and hide the hole. Use screws to attach the bracket. Use small screw heads or they may interfere with installation of the fan. Do not attach the vent hose until the until is installed. You may need to pry the unit into the bracket unless you cut a much larger hole. I was able to GENTLY pry both units into the bracket from the bottom. Do at your own risk, but they won't just snap in. The vent attachment point and the bottom skirt of the unit can be removed for installation. I didn't see any benefit from doing this, but just FYI. Tools I used: sheetrock saw, Phillips and slotted screwdrivers, drill (pilot holes), pry bar, level, pencil. Materials I used: wood screws, duct tape, caulking, shims.

This fan does a good job of sucking out the humidity from taking a shower. We were without a fan and light for a couple of months (waiting for an installer) and it was really nice to have it back again. The fan is pretty quiet, too, which was a real step up from our last one. This is a great fan for a small bathroom.
