Answer:
The setting you use is not based on the chemical content (46-0-0) of the fertlizer but on the coverage area (5000 square feet for example). And the weight of the bag of fertlizer. There is a formular in the owners manual using those two numbers to come up with that setting.

Rated 2.5 out of 5 by 37 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by tips easily, poor design The biggest problem with this item is the wheel spacing. the width is too narrow which leaves it very tippy. It tips over on anything other than flat ground spilling contents. Even empty it tips over. The feed holes look to be a good compromise (there are multiple holes, but they are small. What this means is that generally with grass seed they must be all the way open for anything to get thru. Anything else tends to bind and clog in the holes. You have to have them all the way open to get something flowing, but then it is flowing too fast (because you have to run this pretty slow) poor design and quality October 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't waste your time and money ! I purchased this spreader to use for a small area to pull behind my riding mower or atv took roughly 30 minutes to complete the installation it said on the instructions that it was designed for up to 80 lbs so i only used 50 lbs of grass seed i was able to make about 1/2 of a pass before the gearbox came apart ended up spreading the seed by hand over 1/4 of an acre area was a total waste of 2 hours time and and 2-40 mile round trips to town and back home and 1 week of waiting for a refund to my Home Depot card I was very disappointed and surprised at the quality of the spreader as most all of the items I have purchased at Home Depot have been really good quality please save yourself the time and money and purchase the more expensive one August 25, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Self Destructs The assembly took about an hour to put together not the 15 min it said on the box. Everything seemed to work as expected. I spread 4 bags of lime before the plastic gearbox fell apart. Also the lock mechanism for the spreader settings would not tighten down enough and therefore when the lever was engaged, it would always slip. Also, it also tips over very easily. September 29, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Cheapest pull behind spreader I could find. I made the assumption that "80 lb" was short for 80 pound and that this thing would be sturdy. Filled the hopper with about 40 pounds of weed and feed and made one loop around the yard before the drive mechanism broke. Very flimsy construction. Will be returning this one and buying one that's built better. May 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst spreader ever After using this one you automatically want better one. May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Spreader Easy To use, easy to put to gather. Looks like it will last. May 31, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by bad gear box Used this product three times and the gear box powering the broadcast spreader fell apart with no way of fixing the spreader. Worst purchase ever. May 22, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by not bad the operation of this was great, however, the instructions were absolutely horrible. The box says 15min to assemble, I will argue with that. Not only were the pieces not labeled in the pictures, there were some parts that were not even put in the instructions, other pictures didn't even show the right way to assemble this. I was able to figure it out, but the first time I adjusted the flow amount, it snapped. I was able to fix that as well. It says "made in the USA", but I am guessing the only part made in the USA is the nuts and bolts? I would give this a good review because once I had it together it really performed well, really well- I have a two and a half acre yard that this worked perfect on. But, I will revert back to the instructions, absolutely horrible. I would give them a D- as a grade. The "average" homeowner I am guessing would struggle with this product. April 16, 2016
