Answer:
The setting you use is not based on the chemical content (46-0-0) of the fertlizer but on the coverage area (5000 square feet for example). And the weight of the bag of fertlizer. There is a formular in the owners manual using those two numbers to come up with that setting.

Customer Reviews

80 lb. Broadcast Spreader is rated 2.6 out of 5 by 38.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from tips easily, poor design The biggest problem with this item is the wheel spacing. the width is too narrow which leaves it very tippy. It tips over on anything other than flat ground spilling contents. Even empty it tips over. The feed holes look to be a good compromise (there are multiple holes, but they are small. What this means is that generally with grass seed they must be all the way open for anything to get thru. Anything else tends to bind and clog in the holes. You have to have them all the way open to get something flowing, but then it is flowing too fast (because you have to run this pretty slow) poor design and quality

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your time and money ! I purchased this spreader to use for a small area to pull behind my riding mower or atv took roughly 30 minutes to complete the installation it said on the instructions that it was designed for up to 80 lbs so i only used 50 lbs of grass seed i was able to make about 1/2 of a pass before the gearbox came apart ended up spreading the seed by hand over 1/4 of an acre area was a total waste of 2 hours time and and 2-40 mile round trips to town and back home and 1 week of waiting for a refund to my Home Depot card I was very disappointed and surprised at the quality of the spreader as most all of the items I have purchased at Home Depot have been really good quality please save yourself the time and money and purchase the more expensive one

I have only used it once, but it performed better than the negative reviews led me to believe it would. After reading the good and bad reviews I decided to take a chance. Based on the issues the negative reviews revealed, I made sure to assemble it carefully and use it properly. I covered my 3/4 acre lawn with it without any issues. I was careful not to turn too fast so I wouldn't have the tipping issue, and I was careful to set the spreader settings properly. Even though my review is good, I will point out two issues I faced. 1) The instructions were not clear enough to put it together in 15 minutes, so it took me about an hour. 2) It spread well, but that is relative coming from me because I don't have a better spreader to compare it to.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Self Destructs The assembly took about an hour to put together not the 15 min it said on the box. Everything seemed to work as expected. I spread 4 bags of lime before the plastic gearbox fell apart. Also the lock mechanism for the spreader settings would not tighten down enough and therefore when the lever was engaged, it would always slip. Also, it also tips over very easily.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from AllfitHD 80 lb.Broadcast Spreader I pull the spreader behind my lawn tractor and I have a slightly slanted yard and twice I had to stop and vacuum up my fertilizer after the spreader turned over. The tongue of the spreader is a weak point (aluminum) and twisted when I was on the slant and dumped.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from don't go cheap The spreader was a royal pain in the butt to assemble.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for the price This isn't the highest quality by any means, but it works well. I spread 4 40+ lb fertilizer bags with it & it did fine throughout; each bag filled it up basically to the top. The spreader is very light-weight (my 6yo could move it around very easily), but also didn't cost very much! lol It was super-easy to put together in a few minutes & to learn how to use. The open/close handle is easily accessible from the mower while you are on it (which I wasn't sure it would be from the pictures). Being light worked out well when I had trouble backing into some tight spots; we were able just to lift the thing up & place it where needed & then start up again.
