Does Echo device come with a remote when purchased?

no, sells for $30 via amazon.

Re: Programming

Can Alexa be programmed to turn the tv on and off or call someone from a cell phone?
Asked by: DEE
Not at the current time, but there are lots of bluetooth device profiles added to Alexa over the next year or so. Alexa can turn on/off many home automation devices (lights, outlets, etc) for the major manufacturers, but I don't know of any infrared controllers that could turn the TV on/off. You could use one of the remote AC outlet controllers, but that would be like unplugging and plugging in the TV when you wanted to turn it off and on.

Amazon Echo is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 96.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Own Personal Live-in Assistant! I went to a friends house to help him set up his Phillips Hue lighting set, and he showed me Alexa (or Echo or Amazon, depending on your other live-in partner's preferences :)). It turns out neither needed setup, and I was so convinced of it's value that I rushed to Home Depot before it closed because I couldn't wait for 2 day Prime shipping. It wasn't until bringing it home that I realized it's full value - all I wanted was a Bluetooth speaker that control my Hue system. I quickly downloaded the IFFT app (if-then app that allows you to connect this device with dozens of services, including g-mail, GPS location, smart thermostats and door locks, and much more). Wow, was I surprised. When I started automating all the tasks I completed on a daily basis, it added up to several hours a week in saved time and ease. Here are some ways that I use it: - Lighting system - Music (spotify, amazon prime, or any other bluetooth device I want to connect) - Automatic turn off and on of lights when I enter and exit a geographical area (my apartment complex) - Text message alerts of the weather each morning - Auto-sent messages of my to-do list and shopping list from my g-mail account to my work account each day - Reminders via text and e-mail to keep in touch with family - Cycling the lights as the Space Station passes over my home - Reading me the news each morning - Reading audio books to me as I get ready in the morning - Ordering me an Uber while I sit on the couch - Playing entry music and flashing strobe lights when I approach my apartment and friends are inside with my wife (or just generally trolling them in other ways:)) There's much, much more it can do. Even since I bought it a month ago, they've added functionality (and will continue to do so) that I have yet to take advantage of. Economically, it's worth the value in terms of time saved each day. Personally, it's worth the value from the enjoyment and ease it brings to my life. I don't write reviews normally, but I feel passionately that you can't go wrong with this device. I never forget to run the errands that my wife requests, I keep in touch with friends and family more frequently, and I save money and worry by auto-controlling lights via parameters I control. The list goes on, and on, and on. BUY THIS PRODUCT. It's only going to get better. One warning: if you have a live in partner, expect a bit of skepticism and even jealousy until you can prove to them the value (hence my recent change from "Alexa" to "Echo"). I'm only half-kidding on that one :).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun & Functional We've been integrating HA products into our household for about 2 years now. (We're a Wink family.) Until this purchase, we had been controlling the different features via our phones, iPads, or via timers and sensors. Amazon Echo allows us to go hands-free, which has a futuristic, almost decadent feel to it when controlling our different HA products. It's also VERY easy to setup right out of the box! With our new Echo in our home office, it's been very nice to play background music, get traffic updates before leaving for work or the airport, get announcements about coming events on the calendar, and to get a Flash News Briefing at the beginning of the day. We also regularly check the weather before going out and will occasionally use the timer feature to set reminders. Amazon continues to offer new “skills” as well, and during our family Christmas celebration, our guests had a lot of fun asking Echo for jokes, Christmas facts, and Santa Clause's updates/whereabouts. As to the device itself … the black cylindrical shape blends easily in the room and is rather unassuming. The blue and white light ring at the top gives you an indication of when the device is actively listening or responding to your voice commands, although I admit it has a somewhat Cylon-ish or KITT feel to it. The built-in microphones easily pick us up in the room, the hallway outside the room, and sometimes even the next room over. The wake-word, Alexa, has been easy for us to use, but I know it can be adjusted if the need arises (e.g. someone in your house is named Alexa). The speakers are also remarkably clear, and at most we’ve used about a quarter of it’s volume capacity. The Echo app was easy to download and setup as well. From the app, you can customize your settings, name your specific device, add new devices, adjust your play lists, link your Google Calendar, etc. So far, we’ve used the app to customize our news and sports briefings, traffic updates, and to browse and add new playlists. We’ve used the to-do lists and shopping lists a little, but we also have Google Keep, and right now the two don’t sinc with each other, so we’ve gone back to using only Keep. We’ve also added our Pandora account, but I have to admit that we mostly just use our Prime Music account. One last thing to note is this… as previously mentioned, Echo is very easy to setup. There aren’t a lot of instructions in the box, but more detailed instructions can be found online. We setup our device within just a few minutes, ran some voice training (which allows Echo to better understand your voice commands), and then quickly linked our Echo to both our Wink Hub and Philips Hue. With only a few exceptions, everything was functioning in under 15 to 20 minutes. We did have some extra questions about linking our Google account to the device, but with the power of Amazon backing Echo, the response was very quick. There’s obviously a very strong customer service team there to offer support. Pros: easy setup, look/feel, microphone/speaker functionality, ever increasing features, backed by Amazon Cons: link only 1 Google account per device, traffic updates by location must be preset and are not easily flexible, if you're already paranoid about privacy/security/Big Brother listening in on you - Echo’s microphones are likely to freak you out even more. All-in-all, we are very pleased with our purchase of Amazon Echo, and we can definitely recommend the product. We’re already considering a 2nd Echo for the house!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So cool! Bought the echo Black Friday for my husband for Christmas but couldn't wait to give it to him (and me). I wasn't disappointed. I had it in my kitchen playing during my family pre Christmas gathering. So cool! I love it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty neat for home automation Got this primarily because I like the voice activated feature to play music and finding out the weather, works great. Purchased some smart link light bulbs and have connected them to the Echo as well, works OK (network connection for the lights drops out sometimes). Haven't used the Amazon quick purchase feature. Overall, pleased with the product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cool product Cool product - understands what you are saying 95% of the time. Only issue is that you cannot mess around with it like SIRI. Not really an issue, but is very annoying that everyone who talks to it says something sarcastic and it doesn't get it. Also, it is really cool upfront, but does not get used very often. Traffic feature isn't good. Doesn't alert you of accidents - just tells you how long it will take you to get where you have to go. Also for the traffic - you can only set ONE route (have to do it in the app). So in all - neat toy - traffic not very helpful - not something you *need* but it is fun t least for the first week or so. Maybe it will get better with updates.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for your smart home I recieved my Echo as a gift. I was a little skeptical at first, but I find myself using it all the time. I turn on or off my lights, tv, and other electronics. It replaces my bluetooth speakers, alarm clock, radio, and many other items. I use it to control my thermostat and smart vents.
