Answer:
This item only has two options. "Auto" will allow the light to come on at dusk and/or when there is a power outage, and "On/Off" for the ability to use it as a flashlight. There is no way to turn off the night light feature only.

Does anyone know:

1) Is the battery replaceable?
2) How does it work in auto mode? I only want this to come on in a power failure, when its dark. NOT just come on like a night light every night.

Answer:
Because it is a rechargeable battery, it charges only when plugged into an outlet and cannot be replaced. "Auto" mode allows the light to come on at dusk and/or when there is a power outage. Unfortunately, there is no way to turn off the night light feature.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Emergency must have I used one in Vermont when the power went out at the hotel. Great idea for travelers in a strange place. Bought a dozen to give as stocking stuffers. Perfect for home and I have them in the suitcase for travel. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great in an emergency This light is the best. I gave them as Christmas gifts. January 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product I have two cats and when I'm at work or gone for the day I worry about if I have a power failure. It's a myth that cats can see in total darkness . I love the idea that if I'm gone or at home myself and I loose power that now with the auto night lights I can see in the dark. I feel more secure just knowing I can see in the dark and so can my pets. Plus I don't have to worry about leaving a candle burning during the night. October 21, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by performs not exactly as advertized. It says it turns "on" when the power goes out., if the power goes out, and it's set to "Auto" it does NOT come on if its daylight in the room. (but the tiny red light goes out) If you set to Auto, and the room becomes dark, it comes on whether you want it to or not. If you set it to "Off", you might as well keep it in a drawer somewhere. Other than that, they make cute little rechargeable flashlights. I have 4 of them. September 5, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works well as described This light works well during storm season in South Florida. I have several plugged into hallway outlets to light the way during power outages. The light also works as a small flashlight when needed. I have had two of these units fail (likely due to battery failure) after 2 or 3 years of use. For the price, it's worth it to keep lighting at hand when needed. August 19, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed This is made to stay plugged as a nitelite and emergency lite. It hogs both outlets in a room with only one outlet station. Not very thoughtful. October 7, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by have 4 of these currently These are great lights. they have lasted over 5 years. work every time. Dont HAVE to function as a night light like the LED ones on the market. After 5 years, its time to replace them. Hope the new ones last as long and are as trouble free. April 17, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Power Failure Light Been through quite a few and this one has lasted the longest and worked the best. We have a lot of outages. It goes on when power goes off. Keeps away the boogy man!! February 27, 2009
