Does anyone know the exact rough opening for this 24"x38" window?

The specs seem to show two different rough openings. I'd like to frame it in since the window won't be here for a week. Thanks.
Asked by: RO101
Windows are measured in two different ways: "Rough Opening" (RO) & "glass size". As indicated by the second response, the RO on the 24x38 is 26.25 in. x 41.25 in., just as it is posted within the Specifications tab for that window. These are the numbers you'll need to frame the window properly. Never frame a window until you have a definite answer on the RO number, and even when you do know the number, always allow yourself a little extra in case the hole isn't perfectly square or the framing wood is slightly warped; usually an extra 1/2" added to the width & height is adequate, but the bigger the window, the more care you'll need to take on measuring & squaring the frame. The 24x38 measurement is the glass size, meaning it has 6.33 sq/ft of potential lighting space. This number is used by your local building inspector to calculate the minimum requirements for emergency egress from the room, potential sun-light space for the room, and heat loss/gain (if your building inspector is advanced enough). The first response was definitely incorrect and judging by use of the "cut back" phrase, was likely intended as the number required for a replacement window, not a new installation window such as this style.

Do u have windows with full screen ?

Asked by: Charlie
I do not have full screens, but I know I could call and get them. I asked American Craft last week. Try HD first, and if they don't have them, they will give you the number for American Craft. My replacement for my 33 year old half screens are only about $13 each, from American Craft, but the shipping costs $25.00. If you have new windows, they may be in the HD.

I've installed literally hundreds of windows, many of the vinyl new construction type like this window.. I was both surprised and thrilled with the quality of these windows FOR THE PRICE. They are comparable to other vinyl windows by other mainstream manufacturers and I would not hesitate to purchase these again for a budget job where economy is a focus. They sport several features that make them more desirable than other windows I've installed and are stocked readily in most stores. Cheers!

Bought 10 of these windows and quite a few of them are very drafty when windy where the sash meets the jambs. Contacted American Craftsman and they did send someone up to try to fix the problem. He made an effort but still drafty. Poor workmanship. Will be contacting them again.

The weather stripping along the edges of the bottom and top sashes where they meet is letting in drafts. On a cold windy day you can feel the breeze at the corners where they two sashes meet. I replaced 10 windows with these and all have the same problem in varying degrees. One window you can see daylight out one side of the top sash. I checked and the window is square. Contacted the company and they sent a guy out. He aggress with me, ie. poor workmanship.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Looks are not everything The widows look good and are energy efficient. BUT, they are very difficult to put in if you remove them from the frame. I have had 4 of the 10 windows spring release due to the screw at the top popping out. One released from the bottom and shot up putting a hole in the frame at the top. I believe it has more to do with the weight of each section than the design itself. If I had to do it again I would save the 100.00 per window and go with the single hung. Also, I wish they had used a black screen. The grayish one supplied obstructs a great view, especially in the sun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Windows The windows came in ahead of schedule and packaged very well. They are replacements for the junk windows that are in home. Installation was a breeze. I made some window seals and trimmed inside and they look great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Make sure you have all the pieces upon purchase! We have now replaced 18 windows in our house. 16 of the 18 installs went well. However, the last two windows we purchased were missing the head expander (or cap) piece upon purchase. We did not know this until the day of the actual install after we had 2 big holes in the side of our house waiting to slip the windows into place. Since Home Depot did not have extra head expander pieces, and after many phone calls and several trips to local stores that specialize in windows, we found a local window installer who had a few extra head expanders laying around that we were able to purchase. My recommendation: Make sure you check the package for all pieces when you get it home so you don't run into this same problem!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy Bought and installed about 20 windows in my home from American Craftsman, of those probably 8 need replacing. Most of those are because over time the glass gets 'etched' markings making it difficult to even see out of. I've had 2 where the window hinges that allow you to open inward to clean have broken off. To clean these now I need to go outside because you can't get the windows re attached after they are flipped inward. They don't seal worth a darn either. They look nice (if the glass isn't etched) and if you are replacing rotted 1920's windows they will offer a benefit but they are junk in the long run. Spend a bit more and get better quality. I regret buying these and of course the etching thing happen after the 90 day return policy. JUNK!
