I installed 2 Champion 4 toilets. One seems to run off and on throughout the day. As if the flush valve wasn't closing all the way or there was a leak somewhere. Both a one piece models so there are only a couple spots to leak from and I don't see any of them as the culprit. could the valve not be sealing properly?
Asked by: Anonymous
Be sure the pull chain is loose enough to allow the flush valve to seat properly. Make sure the water level is 1/2" down from the overflow tube. Make sure the flush valve seal is not distorted in any way or there will be a slow leak into the bowel.

I called AS to confirm that a 3" (inner diameter) soil/waste pipe is sufficient for this Champion 4.

I hired a plumber to install my toilet. There was a problem at the ideal bend that only a professional plumber could handle without trouble.

Customer Reviews

Champion 4 1-piece 1.6 GPF Single Flush Tall Height Elongated Toilet in Linen is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 150.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Toilet Ever! No problems, works great! I researched the internet for customer, plumber and industry reviews for a residential toilet with an excellent reputation for not clogging. This particular American Standard model is the one with the largest diameter flush valve and trap way for fast, most effective flushing. One piece construction, advanced siphon design and high water level in the bowl are other worthwhile design features. Some shoppers are concerned with the style, others want silent operation, conservationists want to use the least amount of water per flush, but I learned the hard way that the most important detail is how well the toilet works. I recommend this model for home use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pros and Cons Pros: Flushes more volume down without clogging while using the same 1.6 gpf as its replacement. Tank refills very fast. Pleased with its performance. We got the one-piece for looks, but the two piece Champion costs much less for the same performance. Cons: First toilet was defective and had to be returned (water seepage from tank due to manufacturing defect of the tank china at the inside tank corner). Second toilet was not defective, but had black "gunk" in a few places on the outside china which we were able to remove with some abrasive solvent. Obviously, quality control problems and poor final inspections by American Standard at least on these two units.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbeleavable Due to the fact I am handicapped, I hand both toilets installed professionally by a licensed contractor. The toilets were delivered un-marked even though the packaging was damaged. The added height makes it a pleasure to sit on since I have scoliosis of the spine. They clean themselves, so you no longer have to have a brush nearby. The wider throat makes stopping up a toilet a thing of the past. My credit card was back charged the excess amount when the toilets went on sale 2 days after they were installed. It was a savings of q164 dollars. Kudos to HOME DEPOT. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS TOILET & HOME DEPOT!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good performance, not thought out well I have no issues with the day-to-day performance of the toilet. It performs as advertised. The trip lever is inadequate for this toilet. The weight of the tank water on top of the oversized 4" flush valve puts added stress on a plastic trip mechanism. It felt spongy from day one, and broke after about two years. Additionally, the flush valve does not have enough flotation to allow a proper flush of the full tank. You must hold the lever until the flush is complete. I would probably recommend it to a friend because there's no better flush unless you get a pressure toilet... that is, as long as you upgrade the trip lever right away to a metal one that should have been included originally.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a toilet and a darn good one My old toilet was big and was flushing a lot of water down the drain, yet sometimes it would clog. So I had some serious doubts about a 1.6 gpf toilet. Furthermore, my bathroom is small. This toilet has a smaller tank, which made it look smaller and made the bathroom a bit more spacious, yet the flush was incredible. One swoosh and everything went goodbye. Did not experience any leaks nor clogs. Plus, the one piece design has always been my favorite and this one did not disappoint. I also got an American Standard tub, so the colors matched perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful Yet Quiet Toilet Our bathroom remodel has just completed, and we were looking for a nice looking one-piece toilet to complement the flair of the upscale new design. We read the review on Home Depot and chose Kohler Santa Rosa 1.28 GPF one-piece Elongated; it turned out to have a surprisingly powerful flush but the toilet leaks; for every two minutes or so, the water tank will refill. As such, we returned the toilet and swapped with this babe. The price came a bit steeper than the Kohler Santa Rosa but the quality is next to none. Seriously, pay a little extra and you will sleep well at night.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The search is over...we found our flush After a month of exhaustive research (I know, it seems excessive) we decided on the American Standard Champion 4 one piece elongated toilet in the comfort height. I read every consumer review on toilets, spoke with reps at a few major manufacturers as well as various plumbers, learned the differences and made my decision. I did all this because I didn't want to hear my husband say "I liked the old toilet better." The old 3.5 gpf toilet worked well for 20+ years but it was a water hog, the bottom developed an etched-in stain, and it needed a new wax ring. The new AS is a winner! It's hefty, one piece design looks good and the comfort height is wonderful (we're 5'11" and 5'3".) The one piece design has less crevices to clean and flushes like the champion it's named for. The flush is more like a gulp, powerful and pretty quiet with no spray-back, and because it's 1.6 gpf it refills quickly just in case you need a second flush. Not a second flush to clear what's being sent down but sometimes the user isn't quite finished if you know what I mean. Here's another plus that nobody mentions. The new bowl shape is different and there's half as much water than the old toilet so there's virtually no noise when you tinkle, which is especially nice for guests. We had it professionally installed and installation was a breeze for the plumber. It's been over a month and I've not heard one complaint. It does not come with a seat which is fine because the models that include seats are always flimsy. Be sure to order the coordinating Champion 4 slow close seat with easy click-on/off installation feature - it works perfectly and no more slamming noises! NOTE: If you're on a budget the 2 pc version of this toilet is sold as a package and includes a plain (flimsy) seat for half the price. Same specs just not as slick looking.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed Design of the Tank portion of the toilet is unsatisfactory. When initiating the flush nearly 1/2 of the water capacity remains in the bottom of the bowl as it has baffles on each side of the discharge opening, thereby blocking half of the tank's water to be utilized. I am aware this is a 1.6 gallon model, however, It may hold 1.6 gallons but it only flushes about 3/4 gallon at best. Requires occasional double flushing to remove solids. If you adjust the water inlet unit upwards in order to increase the overall water level, then the top of the float mechasim protrudes above the tank and does not allow the tank lid to fit properly, lid sticks up about a half inch off the tank surface. Very disappointed with this toilet for those reasons!
