Customer Questions & Answers

Do I need drywall?

It says "Mounts directly to studs". But do I need to put drywall up first? I know my question seems silly, but as an amateur DIYer, I need extreme clarity before beginning. Thanks.
Asked by: Matt
No. The reason you don't need drywall is that the surround material is sturdy enough that it doesn't need support between the studs to maintain reasonable rigidity. Also if you are removing an existing tub the distance between the studs on front and back walls would be approximately the standard 60" distance. If you add drywall the distance would be closer to 58.5" so the 60" wide surround back wall would not fit properly.

My back wall is 59 1/2. Can I use this surround

Asked by: Sandy
this surround is 'direct stud' install; if your finished wall is 59.5 the stud wall will be another inch or so and it won't have any problem fitting you'll need to shim.

Do you seal between walls and between tub with caulking?

Asked by: Manny

We have made 3 attempts at removing and re-caulking with clear silicone caulk and even though it is less we still have a small bit of seepage getting onto the back tub ridge and leaking towards the door edge. We have it exposed and know it is not a plumbing issue how can we get this to seal are we using the wrong caulk?
Asked by: Lespaul
You have to explain better where you are putting this seal; the tub is designed to not have a seal between the surround and the tub; water can get behind the surround on the tub lip but it is designed to drain back into the tub. if the water is coming out toward the door, it sounds like your tub is not level. easier to solve than re-leveling the tub, remove any caulk between tub and surround, then make a little 'levee' with silicone at the outside edge of the tub ridge (behind the surround) to guide any water behind the surround to come back into the tub before it makes it to the door. If you put sealant at the seam between tub and wall, you will retain moisture behind the surround and get mold.

Installed one for my nephew and here is a tip for anyone thinking about purchasing this unit. When the surround is a bit flimsy use 1/4 " hardi tile board on the studs from just below the tub lip to the ceiling. Then generously glue the surround to it with tub surround adhesive, solid as a rock ! A little more work and expense but the unit is reasonably priced to allow it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Thin surround Since this was a direct to stud application I expected it to be thicker and stronger. After installation it looked very nice. Problem was that it was flimsy between the studs. I had to reinforce between the studs from behind with adhesive and horizontal 2x4s. Once properly supported from behind it was fine.

One thing I want to mentioned that if you install this over dry wall, some drywall removal needed as the panels are not flat, they sort of curve in toward the wall.
