Customer Questions & Answers

Do I need to use a poly sheet between the mortar bed and the tub or between the mortar bed and the subfloor?

If possible, I don't want to create a situation where the mortar bonds to the tub or the floor making it difficult for the next remodel. Please advise.
Asked by: Jeff
I used one between the mortar and subfloor, that way the water didn't wick into the plywood. Between the tub and mortar I did not, but that may aid the removal if needed in the future.

How wide is it really?

At its widest point, how wide is this tub? The Home Depot website spec says it is 36.875 in wide. The American Standard spec says 33.75 in. Which is correct? (If it is 33.75 it will fit in my bathroom, 36.875 will make it too close to the toilet.)
Asked by: CustomerInTX
It is 33 5/8 at its widest point. I just had mine installed this morning. I called American Standard on several things before ordering and found them to be very knowledgeable and helpful. I hope it fits for you. I absolutely love mine.

Tile flange?

The illustrations do not show a tile flange. can this tub unit be used with tile walls?
Asked by: Jimm
Yes, you'll want a backer board to go up before you tile, and I believe the backer board should not be in direct contact with the tub (it should be supported independent of the tub). Note that the lip/flange on the tub is ~1/2" thick.

Width of tub

What is the width of the tub at the center top, where it curves out?
Asked by: KarenK
It comes out an extra 3 3/4 inches to a total of 33 3/4". Makes it great in the tub itself, but "pinches" into leg area when on the toilet in standard 5x8 bathroom.

Ovation 5 ft. Right Drain Bathtub in Arctic White is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 59.

This was my backup tub, which I purchased because the original tub I ordered was delayed in shipping. I was hesitant about the width because I thought it would be too cramped in my small bathroom. However, the tub I purchased (60 x 30) fit perfectly in the area and due to the placement of the toilet, the tub did not take up a lot of extra floor space or make the area feel cramped. When I saw the tub in store, the sleek look and visually larger size sold me! The difference between the regular width deeb tub and this tub seemed stark too me, the other tubs seemed too narrow. The only concern I have with the tub is that I feel that the acrylic stains easily. I had some blue dye on my arms from my new jeans and after soaking in the tub, realized that the side of the tub was stained. I instantly washed it off, then used spicnspan and a very light blue stain is still present. I know, I know, no dye, but it is a bathtub! I'm not sure if I will like having to take a washoff before I get in the tub to make sure I do not stain it.

Recently I purchased this tub after reading reviews from previous customers. I am very impressed with the outcome. This was a DIY project that replaced an original tub that wasn't properly installed and the costs were within our budget. My husband and son-in-law who does home remodeling tore everything out to the studs. The tub was a tight fit and they had 1 "dry fit" before installing a 2nd time with 1 bag of mortar. Looks great!! As other reviewers have stated it adds space to a smaller bathroom and I bought a new curved shower rod, liner and curtain. As this is our second bath, we don't use it much except for guests. It has only been done for two weeks but we have had numerous compliments. We elected not to use the surround and had it tiled instead. I chose the subway tiles along with accent tiles and sporadically placed them as shown. All of the tile work is individual tiles. One of my family members thought it was a surround. Just my idea. Don't forget to use the Hardiebacker board to prevent water damage. This tub met my expectations and I am so glad I researched it on Home Depot's website. Some reviewers stated that they thought the front panel was flimsy but I don't agree. The plumbing lined up, to our surprise, but it is best to use the drain kit. Our's had to be reduced from 1 1/2" to 1 1/4". I think you will be pleasantly surprised as I am with the outcome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big on style, easy to clean My renovation guys had no trouble installing this tub. We used white gloss subway tiles for the surround. The tub's front curve and spaciousness steals the show - stylish and inviting. I chose it to replace a garden tub that made the small-ish master bath seem cramped. This tub adds lots of foot space and the luxury feel that my pre-reno bathroom was missing while keeping me in a reasonable budget range.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Spacious Install - * Needs a mortar bed, used 2 bags, was overkill, could have gotten away with 1 on a flat floor. * Instructions show a flat lip, actual lip is 1/2"+ deep. I followed the directions for the attaching with roofing nails, just make sure you get screws/nails that are 1/2" longer than what you would expect with a flat lip. * Tub is described as 60" long, mine was 60 1/4" long. Required some plainning on the studs in the alcove to get it to fit. I managed to chip one corner of the vykrel trying to get it in the first time. * Tub requires stringers and studs in the right places (especially if you're using the matching surround) * Drain bottom wasn't perfectly flat, but we mounted the drain before setting it in place to get a really solid seal. Quality * Seems pretty solid, the vykrel finish took all of the abuse in the construction efforts (except the corner I chipped the first time I tried to dry fit it). The whole vykrel tub is wrapped in a solid layer of fiberglass and the bottom has a 3/8" or 1/2" OSB and 3 runners under it all fiber glassed into place. With the mortar bed I'm expecting no issues for a long time with this tub.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Roomy and looks great This tub is much roomier than a standard tub and looks great. It is a little slippery compared to our old tub though. We took the advice of another reviewer and filled the front edge with expanding foam to add rigidity and retain heat. We did not install the recommended drain as our plumber preferred a different drain assembly. Overall an outstanding value, and easy to install. It is incredibly light weight.
