Answer:
the instructions posted by HD are out of date, and said "no"
more recent ones say "acceptable"
From what I can tell, many installers think it helps reduce flexing and creaking

Customer Reviews

Princeton 5 ft. Americast Left Hand Drain Bathtub in White is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Beware - water damage into wall or floor likely, water on tub edge does not drain into tub! I wanted to like this tub for our guest bath - it is simple, sleek, not too heavy to install, the brand stamp is subtle, the non skid surface is annoying, but required by law, and not as rough and ugly as some tubs. The deal-breaker problem? When this tub is absolutely level, the water pools on the edges. On the raised inner edges of the tub that are tiled down over, the corners are notched out almost down to the level of the top of the tub - not sure why, since these corners are where water pools when one is showering. Thus our contractor decided to install it ever so slightly out of level towards the bathroom floor. So now if one is not very careful with the shower curtain, water that hits the tub edge drains down onto the tile floor instead of back into the tub. Interestingly, water STILL pools in the tiled corners as well....which makes me wonder what's happening under the tile where those v notches are cut out of raised tub edge. So 1 star for not having tub edges that slant slightly INTO the tub. Definitely a very high risk for quite expensive water damage in the walls and/or floors. Why buy a tub with a built in water damage problem?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The tub arrived with a dent and large crack. The tub arrived with a dent and a large crack. I had to purchase another tub at last-minute through my contractor. Essentially the same tub, but over $300 more. Lesson learned: don't buy major items for a renovation online unless you have time to return and replace them built into your schedule.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lots of hairline cracks in enamel surface. Tub might be about 20 years old. Real cast iron would have been fine instead. Enamel surface also got a rust stain on one area like it is porous or something.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The feel of steel Did not put in my self. A clan line short tub. Easy to get in to and out. Just right for older people.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Tub I am very pleased with our new tub, we had an acrylic tub, but this new tub is much better. The look and construction is far superior! It is easy to clean and always has that nice enamel shine! We mounted shower doors to it and both me and my wife are even more pleased! I would recommed this tub to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Kid-Friendly Features We love our Princeton Tub! We installed it on our kid's bathroom for the kid-friendly features. The Americast makes it roomier for fun bath times for kids, plus the Americast materials keep the bath water warmer for a long time compared to cast iron. My kids love to stay in the tub for a hour now because it is so warm. Plus the slip resistant surface is great for kids (and adults)! We love it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality PRODUCT IS DEFECTIVE. This tub was installed two months ago and one month after it's installation, the enamel has begun to chip in a very visible area of the tub.
