Answer:
There is a black coating that is about 1/8" thick that I assume is insulation. There is plenty of room to add additional insulation and I thought about doing that. But I didn't because the tub is attached to interior wall plus I thought the it might sweat and get the insulation wet which might not be a good thing.

Does this tub have an integral back rest at the "shallow" end? If so, how far does it intrude into the well?

No, there's a slight pitch but to call it a backrest would be a stretch. Very happy with tub.

Customer Reviews

Princeton 5 ft. Right Hand Drain Bathtub in White is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent tub for the money I remodeled the other bathroom about 5 years ago and used this tub for that job and it has held up well. Yes, some reviews indicate the bottom stains but to me that's part of the price you pay for being slip resistant. Others talk about water not draining into the tub from around the top but many tubs are like that. I always wipe down the tile and the top of the tub anyway to eliminate the soap buildup. Anyway, I am using the same tub this time to renovate the other bathroom. Beware of similar models made especially for big box stores which may be less expensive but not the same product. I bounce off the American Standard web site and match product numbers down to the last letter/number. Also, tubs come in a variety of colors, sizes (height, width, depth), and drain orientation (left, right) so be sure you know what you are buying before you pull the trigger.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Tub We got this tub at a discounted price during a sale. It was a great deal. It has a high shine which I love. It looks so clean and expensive which it wasn't. Very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Tub--Great Deal The tub has a nice finish, is light weight, and the price was excellent. Installation instructions for a DIY job were excellent. I was replacing an old fiberglass insert model and had no issues with the previous plumbing matching up to the new tub. The one thing I was surprised about was the tub height--14 inches which seems fairly low for a tub, but I got used to it--no regrets. Overall a good experience and a good purchase..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best bath tub for kids The Princeton tub is the best bathtub for kids. It offers great kid-friendly benefits. I like the full slip-resistant surface, it keeps my kids from falling, even with our soft well-water. My kids like that this tub is deeper, flatter and roomier than older cast iron type tubs because the have room to stretch out and play. We all agree that the Americast Brand Engineered Material is genius as it keeps the bath water warmer for longer. Sometimes too long as my kids don't want to get out of the bathtub ever since the water stays so warm! :) This is an excellent choice for any bathroom, but especially for kids and elderly to prevent falls. Read my full review on AkronOhioMoms website. My review was that of my own experience, thank you American Standard for the review items for my blog.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from We have 125of these tubs in Hotel.. Buyer beware! As people have said the water will collect in the corners of the tun. The tubs will discolor after 3 to 4 months of useage also the chip very easy. All 125 tubs here have standing eater in corners poor application of final finish, chips and rust around main drain. WATCH OUT!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from using americast since 1990 In 1990 was looking for a good substitute for cast iron, americast had just come out and the sales man at the supply house said it was the best thing sinced sliced bread. Having heard those word before I first installed it in my own house, after 21 years it still look great and works great. It is my standard tub for all instalations that the owner wants a tub shower combination. never had a recall, does't rust or rot like many steel tubs good product for any standard bath.
